Why bibshorts?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Why bibshorts?

Was looking over the latest bike gear catalog, perusing pictures of bibshorts, and wondering: what is the advantage over plain old shorts? And also, do those suspender straps bug you on long rides? Do you wear the jersey inside or outside those straps?

Thanks in advance for satisfying my idle curiousity.

Jersey over the straps...

For me... Bib's provide more support...they don't sag down, and just more comfortable....

I do not even realize I have suspender straps... so no they do not bother me...

where are the pro's who wear bibs.

No waistband to annoy/chaffe etc. on long rides.

For the longest time I resisted bibs -- "no way do I want to look like some 1920's pugilist or a WWF reject".

But I finally got a pair, and have not worn regular shorts since. Just the fact alone that the top of the shorts no longer rolls down when I'm all aero is tits.

The straps are hardly noteworthy once they are on.

--Base layer
--Bib straps over that
--Jersey over that

No waistband digging in was the biggest thing I noticed when I switched.

There is no comparison. Come to think of it, I really wish i'd never spent any money on standard drawstring-waistband shorts before I knew any better.

When I first started, it was just shorts. Then I got bibs and I never had a problem with my shorts sagging or the waistband rolling or getting uncomfortable.

Had to suffer my wife giggling at my "unitard" or my "onesie". She wanted to see me in just my "tights"...

"They're bibs! Honey, I love you...but shut up."

Bibs always go under the jersey - always. Bibs kick ass. The only time I don't wear them is when I'm on the trainer for a very short spin.

I haven't owned anything but bibs in probably 10 years. No waistband == no problem. I've never noticed the shoulder straps being a problem. BTW, I second the recommendation above, that for the torso, base layer (when appropriate) under bib straps, jersey ALWAYS over unless you want to look like a no0b.

More comfortable.

When you have a waist strap thats really tight it gets annoying and uncomfy.

For some reason I got very bad stomach problems, morea long the lines of gastrointestinal. Bad cramps for some reason(I was 28 pounds heaver then though). After that I really never wore them again, unless mine are dirty and I have to borrow my dads.

Why bibs?

Cause Crack Kills....

Ok, not so much the crack, but I hate when I am aero and the jersey rides up and there is a gap to the shorts.

Bibs hold my nut$ up out of the way, and you can't usually see as much crotch definition as with shorts

I have just switched to Bibs after wearing shorts for so long and I wont go back to shorts . They are just so much more comfortable. And yes they hold the gut in, they dont roll down and they hold the boys in the right place so they dont get squashed on the saddle.

I started wearing bibs this past year and don't intend to go back. I think most cyclist that try bibs usually end up swearing by them. The are just more comfortable.

That is true.

I got bibs first. Then I tried regular shorts. I wore them once. Next day I bought another pair of bibs. Try 'em, you'll see.

I have a mix of bibs and shorts, but I am only buying bibs now as I need new cycling pants.
