Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How I was hit by a car

This is the three pictures traffic light camera took. The guy in the red jacket is me. My helmet was absolutely smashed, I got away with open fracture of tibia and fibula in the left leg.

OMG, I am so sorry for you. How are you feeling? And I am sure the driver is paying big time for your injuries and any other damages? That 3rd pic is gnarly.

Wow! Glad you had minimal injuries. Thanks for posting, makes me more conscious of drivers on the road each time I see something like this.

I never, ever, ever expect a car to stop even at a red light, or for some stupid reason decide to go after stopping at the red.

"...got away with open fracture..." still is pretty horrible! Ugh. Gives me the heebie-jeebies. Glad it was the helmet that cracked and saved your skull. Thank you for posting the pictures. I'll make sure my boys see these to hopefully make them think twice about any traffic.

Texting while driving? It's like she was oblivious to the red light. Kinda neat that they sent you the pics.

In any event, I'd say you made it out of there pretty light. Speedy recovery!

Have you recovered fully from the injuries? Rehab can be a *****. Good luck with it if you haven't completed it. Are you riding again?

Hate to bring it up since the driver clearly ran the light but why were you riding in the crosswalk?

I'm glad you're alive and in good enough shape to post. Get well soon.

Glad the camera caught what happened. Hopefully, that evidence will allow a proper remedy for this occurrence.

Wow, hopefully they got the person that hit you. Those pictures make me feel sick, it brings back the feeling of terror as you realized you're about to be hit broadside and there is nothing you can do about it. How's the recovery going?

Few things, for everyone.

1. This is no pedestrian walkway, this is dedicated bike path crossing. Also we don't have any laws here to walk your bike even on pedestrian crosswalks.
2. I am still recovering. At the moment I can't even take my foot off pedal once I am locked in...
3. Driver had minimal insurance, and while my property damage got covered, the liability part won't even cover my own out of pocket expenses. So I got screwed. Driver did not get in any kind of trouble. I don't want to get into any details, but I had to settle with whatever insurance offered because driver does not have jack ****.
4. Wear a bike helmet. It literally saved my ass. You should have seen what was left of it...

I'll bet the driver's insurance company isn't very happy.

Get them for everything you can.

Cool cameras BTW.

And I'm also glad you lived to post again. Heal well and gain poetry from the pain.

I've never seen a bike path crossway like that. I guess it has good and bad points.

Good to have the evidence to make a claim but it sucks that they had nothing to go after. I thought in Calf. that everyone was required to have massive amounts of insurance. I might have gone after future earnings if that's possible (probably limited also). It looks like its been almost 4 months since the accident so I hope things are getting better. Probably wise not to post about until after the settlement. Most people poset immediately then are advised to stop talking.

Not sure what you consider 'massive' but the minimum amounts required by state law are rather modest:
$15,000 for injury or death of one individual
$30,000 for injury or death of multiple individuals
$5,000 for property damage.
And that's for those who actually are insured - there are still people who manage to evade the requirement.

Glad the OP is recovering, but it's unfortunate that there was effectively no penalty for the driver.

Wow! That's nothing. In TX it's 30/60/25.

Maybe it's just the cost that's massive!
