Thanks for the password. Quite a bit of drama over there. And I had no idea that grumpy had such a potty mouth.

I'm still using mine. I only charge it when I'm in the house. I don't want to think about commuting without it.

Is there any downside to buying a factory refurbished laptop from a place like Bestbuy? Are there any processors I should try to avoid? Computer shopping is very complicated.

seems like the main downside is the planned obsolescence that plagues every computer anyway.
I think if you can save a few hundred and still get something current, go for it.
of course I only get macs these days, and there does not seem to be any issue with overheating.
I do observe a number of people using PC laptops with heat-sink lap-pads.

These days, I would just buy new. There isn't any great savings, and the newest processors are so much more efficient.

Any new computer is going to be way faster than that old thing, and we have a 500GB external HD, so I'm looking at laptops with ~3GB RAM and ~300GB hard drives. It's been so long since I've shopped for a computer I don't know what I should be looking for or looking to avoid.

Is overheating more of an issue now with 'faster' bits? I have an old Dell, I think something like 40GB hard drive and 256MB RAM. I've never had any heating problems with it.

These days that stuff is old school. No need for it anymore with Core2Duo and Core i3 class processors. AMD can be hit or miss. Some are much more efficient than others.
