no argument here. and I have been in this business for a long time, albeit only peripherally involved in pop.

I will state that pretty much any big business is going to be this way. They put their money on a sure-thing. Translation = more of the same crap that made them 15% last year.

I spent the weekend in Lynchburg. The place was pretty much shopping malls and chain restaurants. You'd be hard pressed to find anything unique there. That folks who prefer to live in cookie cutter america prefer cookie cutter american music and cookie cutter politics etc really comes as no supply.

Agreed...but capitalism requires unending growth. Growth is confined by demographics. Expanding demographics opens new markets. We now have an industry specializing in newborn language interpretation. It used to the baby was either wet, hungry or teething. Now for $39.95 you can find out the REAL reason your baby is crying and add another benchmark to why you suck as a parent.

I have a different hypothesis about Dick and Jane's musical tastes.

I think people will listen to "what is there".

i.e if they saturated the airwaves/net/television with challenging, dynamic, complicated and deep music then people would listen to that.

I wonder if that's turning around now with the rise of the inter-webs. More musicians can self publish & self promote and bypass the corporate offices. Groups that would never make it past their neighborhood, can now reach the entire world.

Well, yeah, theoretically, but you still have to get enough word of mouth going for people to want to seek you out. That's difficult without a marketing budget. I think the internet has hurt as many musicians as it's helped, with it being so easy to steal music. When an independent musician has his or her music stolen from them, via the internet, its often enough to make it so they aren't able to support themselves with their music.

Yep...But not to worry the resource depletion will begin in global south countries. Their inevitable die-off will forestall the worst of it barring a major pandemic. Could be centuries before it reaches main street USA.

But that's enough from me. I think I've reached my weekly post quota. Got to learn to pace myself.

not to mention that people don't go out to support live music all that much now, unless it's already an overpriced and highly-marketed national-level act.

think about the vicious cycle of trying to compete with the likes of the names mentioned in this thread over the past few pages. You can't advertise on their level. You can't get on the radio.

Niche marketing is really the way to go. Very specific niches. And give up on any idea of being a "star".

well, I was referring within the context, meaning that the resource depletion (capital) would starve the producers (record companies") out of existence, simply by their unchecked growth.

Went and bought a 1TB external drive for $90. Backing up all my data so I can return this laptop to the grad school. Still have to finalize paperwork... ugh. going in in a couple hours.
I have a long list of bike companies I'm going to submit m resume to, still need to get the resume up to par. This week I'm going to get a job. Specifically a job which will let me off weekends to go race. Too many retail locations are hiring - It would make my life easy, but ruin any chance to race.

True, but so can anyone, and you're on your own for marketing. One thing the conglomerates do well is market. They shove the pap down your throat at every opportunity so that you can't avoid it. Product placement has almost gotten to the point where it is the show, not just a sidebar.

My BIL creates, markets, publishes, and distributes his own music on the side. He could have made more money flipping burgers at Mickey D's in a lot less time.
