This is the first time I've ever done anything with power so I was pretty surprised. Never thought I'd have a power meter, but when someone offered a slightly used SL+ wheel for $300 I couldn't pass it up. I still want to lose another 4-5 pounds (I'm at 160-162 right now) so hopefully that number goes up before I start racing in a few months.

In some cases more so...The Godfather part 2 is a beautiful movie...although its a tough read considering it was never a book. I'd argue that Blade Runner is a better movie than the book it's based on (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep). Documentaries are another form of film making that actually are better than the written word. Seeing people actually suffering rather than just reading the words has far more impact...but I'm sure some would disagree.
Documentaries are clearly powerful when done right, but so are books. I'm not going to argue if one is better or not because they both have their merits and in the end that comes down to the effect that it has on the end user. Different people will have a more visceral reaction for different mediums.
I think one of the most interesting adaptations was Heart of Darkness-->Apocalypse now. Now that was a freaking awesome and messed up movie!
Flatballer, check out we wish to inform you that tomorrow we will be killed with our families by gurevich. It'll be a 'nice' followup to what you saw on Sudan. It's based on the rwandan genocide and it's one of the most powerful books I've ever read.
You'll get it. Just stay away from skateboards. Especially when you're in sandals or barefoot.

Books are almost always better than the movies.
There are a few exceptions.
And sometimes it gets into semantics. For instance "Dr. Strangelove" is a great movie. It is VERY loosely based on a book "Red Alert".

Films based on books are rarely better, but to say books are better than movies isn't true...films are just a different medium and can be as much an art form as the written word. In the case of documentary's, a well made film about just about any subject will have a greater impact than a well written article or book.

ewang thread and Salsa's post got me thinking about the ewang measuring stick.
If your FTP is 400W (per RyanF?). you'd weigh the following amounts to end up mid-pack FTP for the prescribed categories.
Cat 5: 294 lbs
Cat 4: 252 lbs
Cat 3: 215 lbs
Cat 2: 192 lbs
Cat 1: 171 lbs
Domestic: 156 lbs
Which translates into ~30 lbs/category. eWang chart mystifies me. I think about it more than I should. Just ride the bike, right?

Just watched "Paranormal Activity". Brilliant. Very, very good. If you want to get your pants scared off by an incredible movie, get it. Definitely still need to watch [Rec], it's on my DVD delivery list. I hear it's even better.
My eyes were watering at times from the stress, and I jumped about a foot at one point, even sitting with the lights on.

Done.
I should know better than to criticize someone that has sold their soul to their industry and complains about the state of music today while working TV shows that are the equivalent of the Jersey Shore for fat people.
I would never say that. There's a freaking film mafia at wes. One of my housemates is one of said people. Her adviser freaked that she was going into psych research instead of pursuing a career as a female director or whatnot. Basically told her that she was throwing her life away. I **** you not.
I just think that saying that books take longer to say the same thing that movies do is a gross over simplification that simply isn't accurate. They both do what they're supposed to when the right person is in the driving seat. Both have their merits.
I'm just saying that most commercially produced films wouldn't pass for art films. Are they good movies, great entertainment, and well directed? Yes, but they're not art. Just like the drooled on drawings of a toddler aren't art and just like most novels aren't art.
As a side note, see if 'Waking Life' is on instant if you're in the mood for a mind blowingly good philosophical film. I have to watch it again. I didn't understand most of it. It made me think really hard though, which is always nice.

I guess I need to clarify my comment. I wasn't saying that "movies are more of an art form than books". I was just saying that I don't think movies as an art form gets much love. Books didn't get much love in the beginning either. They were looked at as silly distractions and nothing more.

I know I failed. I thought that when you ignore someone, it makes their posts not appear, but it just makes them show up in green lettering saying 'click here!'.
I'm done though. I don't want to ruin gary's thread any more than I've done so already.
