Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bibs were unknown when I started cycling. I didn't have a choice between shirts and bobs. I'd say I succumbed to marketing and peer pressure once bibs became more generally available.

#2 is a hassle, but I can #1 in bib shorts with no problem. They just pull down in front.

No confirmation bias here. I get Baleaf bib shorts for $35. That's cheaper than most non-bib shorts.

I wore non-bib shorts for 3 years before I tried bib shorts. I tried them because I was curious. I usually can't tell what the people I ride with wear because they all look the same with a jersey over them.

I prefer bib shorts because they don't rely on friction to stay up.

The thing I hate most about bibs is whenever I have them on, the nearest bathroom or porta-john is always the foulest place on Earth with no place to safely hang a jersey, gloves & helmet. The bathrooms always seem cleaner whenever I'm wearing shorts.

This maybe deserves a separate thread, but...

Male bib users- Do you have a hard time peeing while wearing bibs? People keep complaining about having to take jerseys off to use the restroom, which seems strange to me. It's really not that hard.

Sure, certain other restroom activities require undressing a bit more, but it's not that hard to time things so that there is no conflict between a ride and a bathroom break.

Well, that would depend on the length of the hose, wouldn't it, on whether or not you thought it was difficult to take care of such things as these.

Oh boy.

I think it depends more on your willingness to accept that you can pull on the front of your NOT SHORTS without ripping them. They're designed to stretch, after all. A little body wrangling and you're free.

Decent quality shorts that fit properly stay put and are very comfortable. If you've got a gut of any size bibs might resolve some issue previously described, but will probably still look not good. Then there's the peeing issue, but that's not why I choose not bibs.

I found a good quality, reasonably priced pair of not bibs and was amazed at how good they fit and felt. I bought 2 more pairs of the same and now have 3 in rotation. It's not bibs for me, I'll never go back to bibs.
Yeah, I find that my shorts don't move any more than my bibs do: in terms of overall comfort and function they're completely equivalent. I've got three pairs of bibs and three pairs of riding shorts and I generally prefer the shorts, simply because it's much simpler to deal with bathroom breaks. With my bibs I can't pee without removing the straps, that means I've got to remove my jersey and it's a hassle I'd rather not bother with.

Plus shorts are usually a bit cheaper, so I'm unlikely to ever buy another pair of bibs.

Am I the only one who finds $400 for a pair of bibs to be totally insane!? I totally get the free will thing and if someone wants to pay that, they have the right, but c'mon.

Well if the hose is THAT long, you can always pull it out from the bottom.

Works well for me.

Say that when you have food-related sickness while touring and have no choice but to pull over and trot to the bushes. Wore NOT bibs back then so it was easier. I was so glad it was a short day and the campground I was headed to had flush toilets.

Nope. I have a pair of Hincapie roubaix knickers that come up a little higher on the belly than most shorts. That one requires a bit of bending over, but it's not that big of a deal. All my summer bibs stretch easily.
