Raleigh Pursuit
I bought a steel 10-speed Raleigh Pursuit yesterday. I can't seem to find it listed in any of the catalogs I have found online. It looks similar to these bikes.

I'm just curious about the history of this model, and why it isn't discussed much in this forum.

OK, I checked tonight. It is a 12 speed. Suntour Acushift 2000 rear derailure. Star brakes and brake levers. Says on the seat tube it is designed in USA and made in Taiwan of 502 CroMo main tubing. I guess this is a late 1980's low end road bike. What do you think?
Edit: Oh, and the wheels are 27 inch (not 700c). That surprises me. All other indications are that it is late 1980's, but I figured 27 inch wheels were not being sold by then. It was originally sold at one of the LBS. So, it isn't a department store bike. Looks like it would be one of the lower-end bikes at the LBS.
Edit: Found a decal down by the BB that appears to be a serial number. Starts with 89-. I guess that means it was built in 1989.

Hi all,
I have two (UK) Raleigh catalogues. One from 1985 & the other from about a year or so later (it doesn't state a year). Both feature a Raleigh Pursuit. It has a black frame & saddle with silver handlecar tape. The UK spec is as follows:
Raleigh 18-23 steel tubing. Racing Geometry
700 x 25c tyres
Sachs-Huret 10 speed deraileur
Selle Royal Aero black suede saddle
28lbs
Gloss black.
It is towards the lower end of the Raleigh range with only a few cycles below in the range. Having re-read the earlier posts the US cycle could be a very different model from that in the UK. Still interesting though as not many of the older bikes (20+ years now) will be in good order.
I aim to scan in the catologues when I have access to a scanner.

Just for an update. I've heavily customized mine now.
Painted black (all my bikes are black)
moustache handle bars
single speed
I want to upgrade the brakes to something more modern, but am having trouble with the reach required.

I have recently aquired a raleigh pursuit frame with derailier, cranks (custom) etc of unknown age.
however it only takes 26 inch wheels comfortably, unlike some described above, (when I fitted 27's there was only a couple of mm clearance at the top of the fork), is this a later model?
any help appreciated,
mike

Any thoughts on whether or not this, my previous post, is worth bring back to rideable condition? It needs tires, a chain, a tune up and much, much labor on the rusty bits.

Okay, to the OP's original question - YES, I'd say tires / chain / tune-up / rust work are squarely within the "worth it" category for this bike. Rust appears manageable, and if all the "moving parts" are good, I'd call it a keeper.

Thank you I agree...deciding to strip it down to a basic bike did it for me.

Having previously owned one, those bikes are nothing special but if it fits and you like how it looks slash rides, do what you want. If you see yourself riding several thousand miles on it, a reasonable amount of money to throw into it is up to $.15 x 3k miles, all in, or around $500.
