Lubing bar end shifters
Just doing some routine maintenance on my tt bike. I want to oil the friction bar end shifters. In the past, I just dropped some oil in the seams between the shifter lever and body without loosening the adjustment bolts. I'm not sure the oil was able to penetrate to any extent since I didn't loosen the adjustment bolt. What's the best way to lube the shifters without risking a screw up the indexing on the right hand shifter? By the way, both shifters we're working fine prior to cleaning and maintenance.

You don't lube barend or downtube levers. Particularly don't lube the front shifter which relies on friction to hold it's setting but the rear indexed shifter doesn't need any either. Wipe the exterior clean and leave the rest alone.

This is one of the lesser talked about controversies. I have found that when the levers have enough friction when lubed to still hold against the der's spring that lube will make their movement smoother.
Are the bar ends SunTours? (Note this key info is missing, Different brands and versions have vastly different internal designs). I'm a fan of SunTours, Used them from 1973 for a few decades till I went to Sachs/campy Ergo (of course my tandem drum brake is still controlled by one). I'm a full believer of lightly greasing these, the friction pack can be tightened to hold and the ratchet function sounds snickety nice. But some can't seem to reassemble these correctly (mixing up the friction pack layers or the ratchet spring/pawl and ratchet wheel can be reversed). So for common people (bad jab, I know) I suggest only removing the tiny screw holding the black cover on and dripping in thick (Phil Ten. oil or ChainL) into the hole. Andy

The bar end shifters are part of a Shimano Ultegra group set, attached ti a set of Vision FSA aero bars.

I have Shimano barend and downtube shifters (same levers and mechanisms) I've used for thousands and thousands of miles and have never lubricated any of them. There seems to be no need to.

Left off which one.. assuming everyone reads minds?
FWIW
With old Campag friction, & Sun Tour power ratchet, a little light oil ,
kept mine from rusting inside..
