Bike shop inventory cleaned out, so I rebuilt my old bike instead!
My bike was tired. Many components were toast after 5000 miles.
New bike deals not to be found, prices selling higher than list, so I rebuilt my old bike instead!
For the rebuild I kept frame/crankset/fork/seat/bars/clips. Everything else was replaced.
Summary: I went with a 1X drive-train, aero carbon wheelset, new Ultegra components.
Original factory bike:
2014 Giant Advance Defy-1 M/L Alux (aluminum)
Base Giant P-R2 Aluminum wheelset
2x10sp Shimano 105 Groupset
Shimano Tiagra, 10-speed 12-30T cassette
2X Chainrings: 34 50T
I found I rarely used the small ring, so I opted to go with a wider range 11sp 11-32T cassette matched up with a 44T 1X SRAM configuration.
I took a gamble and bought Superteam carbon wheelset: 11Speed 50mm deep (23mm wide) V-brake road bike set.
For 1X setup I simply bought the 44T narrow/wide chainring with 5X screw spacing that my stock crankset uses, screw set spaced for 1X ring, No need for new crankset or spindle.
Upgrade/rebuild Expenses:
$43 Shimano 105 CS-R7000 11-Speed Cassette 11-32T
$55 SRAM 44T Chainring X-Sync 1x11 Speed 110BDC 5-bolt
$229 Shimano Ultegra ST-R8000 Road Brake Shifter STI Levers
$70 Shimano Ultegra RD-R8000 GS Mid Cage Road Bike Rear Derailleur 11sp
$23 SRAM PC-1130 11 Speed Chain
$350 Superteam 60mm Carbon Wheelset 700c Clincher 23mm
$39 Continental Ultra Sport II Folding Road Tire 700x25c Black
$15 Butyl Road Bike Inner Tubes - 700x18/25C Presta 80mm stem
$18 MARQUE Hex Bicycle Handlebar Tape
-- Took apart crankset, brakes, pedals and cleaned/lubed.
-- New ultegra cables for brakes and shifter.
Total upgrade cost: $842
PROS: After 500 miles, I can state that results exceeded expectations.
The gearing I settled on is great for my riding.
NOT ONCE has chain come off the 1X chainring.
I have shredded my PB average speeds for all five of my routes by over 1MPH.
Average speeds for zone2 rides are up by about .75MPH.
Aero wheelset for the most part performs very well....crosswinds not a big issue.
Ultegra shifter and derailleur perform well. Dialed in with no troubles and shifting is precise.
Wheelset came with spare spokes and brake shoes.
CONS: Carbon wheel braking is below expectations.
Rear brake shoes got chain oil on them which would not clean off.
I had to take a mm of braking surface off them to restore rear braking performance (which was sub-par to begin with).
Ultegra shifter cable coatings clumped up inside cable housings and had to be cleaned out.

My Chorus groupset is still going strong after over 20,000 miles. replaced chain regularly, and cassette once. replacing bike so I can enjoy newer tech, because I want wider tires etc.

The last time I checked the old stuff that was still good (like the shifters, derailleurs, cables) would not work for a 1X11 anyway. :-)
These are the things that needed work
Cables......both shifter cables where fraying...brakes cables were sub-par braided steel that sucked since new.
Big ring......teeth rounded down and thin.
Chain......
Tires....tubes....I never keep old patched tubes when I replace tires.
Wheels....not worn out. But repaired on three separate times (never let you adult kids borrow your nice stuff).
Rear 105 derailleur....Needed some TLC...nylon idler gears have seen better times. Chain cage bent/repaired.
Front 105 Derailleur.....rarely used small ring...seized up.

These are the things that needed work

My 105 RD has seen better days. I got a new RD and FD coming in soon (shadow rear). Oh... and the R7000 group I just got!

I really enjoyed updating my old bike......the build process is as fun as the ride!

Looks nice and a good choice of components.
I did something a bit similar with my base model 2019 Defy advanced which I converted to 1x.
Also upgraded the wheels, brakes, saddle, and bars.
