Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Being a terrible manager of stress I can assure you it can definitely cause physical consequences. I don't know about your situation but stress could be considered a contributor to many illnesses/maladies.

Someone on FB is posting a Big Boy a day for the next 25 days, figured I might as well repost here, starting off with UP 4001.

Here is a classic picture from the Otto Perry collection in the Denver Public Library: "Eastbound freight train, on bridge; 73 cars, 5 MPH. Photographed: near Green River, Wyo., November 29, 1941". The first year of service for many of the class.

There are various ways to quantify stress and negative stress has clear bad effects on body systems, most of which are mediated by the immune system.

Would eliminating stress or dealing with it more effectively help your joints? I have no answer.

How did the photographer know it was going 5 mph?

He'd presumably get faster too. But not as much as the pair.

Did you watch the video? The two guys were hardly a well-oiled machine.

Like, I'm still upset that I wasn't able to see it live, when it went through this area less than 20 miles away.

During my older son's "Obsessed With Trains" phase, he and I flew up to Portland to spend a day riding a Union Pacific excursion, pulled by what was then the biggest still-operating steam locomotive, Challenger #3985 . That was BIG! Since then, UP restored one of the Big Boys, #4014 , which makes me happy.

Nice! I never saw the Challenger in Portland. Just the SP 4449 Daylight and the Spokane, Portland & Seattle 700.

Last year we followed UP 4014 and 844 from Rock Springs, WY to Cheyenne. It was quite a trip!

Probably ran (racewalked?) along side it for a while, then checked his Strava.

1. Nope
2. No racewalking but I did run back to the car a couple of times, and rode MTB in UT beforehand; also rode in CO and more UT afterwards.

This is Gooseberry, probably my favorite place to MTB:

Some things, yes. Doctors have told me other things were stress related and I believed them but can't prove it helped. One time I had chest pains and was really freaking out and the doc told me my heart was fine and to go ride my bike. Just hearing that made me feel so much better.
20ish years ago I had a bout with BPH and the doc told me stress has a profound effect on that. I noticed every time I would get stressed the pain would come back.
And of course my ulcer and digestive system issues are simple to show correlation.
Like I said, I'm not good at managing stress but since I have retired I have less to stress out over.

Am I oversharing again? I could go on....

One of the funnest experiences I've had was riding the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Train partway to Silverton during a backpacking trip with friends from the Appalachian Mountain Club. On leaving Durango, the train soon begins to climb and the mountains get bigger and wilder. About half way to Silverton, the train stops surrounded by mountains and woods to let off all the packpackers. The conductor pitches all the packpacks out the baggage car door and 50 so people set off into the woods. You won't see them again for the next week when everyone makes their way back to the tracks at a different location, having hiked a loop. After a one hour or so wait, the train stops to pick every one up.

The internet guy said he would be by at 1 PM to re-calibrate the receiver on the roof. We figured if he made it before dark, he would be doing well. I have never run across someone so out of touch with schedules. Once he told me he would be over in ten minutes. It was four hours, and he didn't notice the discrepancy. He has not yet arrived.

Because the TTer was presented as knowing how to ride the bike, so efficiency gains would be minimal.

Why bother? Is GCN going to take down the video and do one that makes a scientifically sound comparison?

Reality: I go in and see yet another new nurse. This one is literally new to the group--she's not even on the website. I googled her and didn't find much, but I don't think she was in rheumatology before.

She comes in and asks these general questions because she's never seen me before. No idea what my arthritis is like. She gets my dosage wrong. Asks me if I want more MTX (even though I'm pretty sure I'm taking the maximum recommended amount). Asks if I exercise (SMH). When I tell her the drug effects don't last the full six weeks she asks me if I want to switch to something else. Am I a doctor? Why am I here?

I was planning on asking this anyway, but the appointment painfully illustrated the problem. So I ask "wut is going on here? Why have I not seen the actual doctor in a year? Why do I keep seeing new people every time? When there's no continuity of care I waste most of the appointment time rehashing all the basic stuff."

She tried to tell me that whoever saw me would be asking the same questions anyway.

"Do you exercise?" SMH

Anyway, after my complaining the doctor came into the infusion room, looked at my joints for a minute, and kind of apologized that I hadn't seen him earlier this year. He tried to blame it on COVID.

I'm still not going to see him until January.
It's between you and your doctor. No one else cares. Is nothing sacred anymore.
