I will present the new user experience from two other cycling forum sites I frequent. One, which was my main go to site a dozen years ago, has no new user restriction. It gets a lot of spam posts, for some reason, new users often have questions answered with snarky responses, sometimes even angry responses and the site is dying a slow, agonizing death. The other, which is still going pretty strong, you essentially have to apply, and then you get to post 3-4 days later. That community is generally a friendly one though.

Im not web savvy enough to know how to make it new user friendlier here, but my impression has always been folks do a nice job of easing new users in. The informal pic assist has always been helpful as well.

Though I probably spend more time on the laptop than I'd like to acknowledge, taking part in 10 conversations on this site is taking me a while. Those who support the rule (which prevented me from posting a photo) about newbies, posts and photos are either more fully immersed in the culture and technoloy of bicycling... or maybe they think the rest of us have a lot of free time to hover over our keyboards. I'll get to 10 posts eventually. I'm now one post closer... meanwhile I'm trying to find appropriate parts for my 1950 Rudge Sports. (Sorry, no photo)

Not too certain that is correct. I am a newbie but have been on here for a few months lurking and made a couple of post. Have no, zero, natta interest in selling one of my bikes that are all vintage just like I am. A Univega Vivatech 1050 that I bought in the '80s, a Gary Fisher Hoo Koo E Koo that I bought used I think around 15 years ago. If you seem them listed it will be my daughter's listing... Still can't show of the beauty I see in these bikes. Why would you care if someone comes here to list a bike. Gives me the opportunity to pick up one more...

I just picked up a pair of '70's Peugeots
Matching Mixte and Racer. Spending most of a day using forum search function and Peugeot threads plus Google 90% of my questions were answered plus a interesting Peugeot education. Eliminated asking a lot of seperate questions which had already been answered.

This thread appears to have been somewhat helpful to some...many newbies are getting their post counts up, closer to 10.
Asking questions, sharing comments and making new acquaintances is always a good thing exactly what the 10 count can and should be used for.

Ten posts, though, isn't a high bar.

If a contributing member has a handful of interests, with cycling, then posting ten or more times into various interesting discussions should not present an insurmountable hurdle. Goes by quickly, actually, assuming a person is willing to post a few times a day to get the feel of the place.

Indeed, it's basically a "scam" prevention tool. Limit links, images and whatnot, for a time, to weed out those sorts. At the small price of requiring a few contributions to the forum's flavor. Not a bad trade, really.

As for whether new questions can be asked by new members, with replies in such a manner that are helpful and "good" contributions to the forum ... well, that'll largely depend on the questions and goodwill of the participants.

I, too, was once a new member. As I recall, there was no ability to post a "for sale" link, post links off-site, post images, etc. Just good basic participation in discussions until I was ready to begin asking about certain things in new threads. Wasn't all that long a wait.

I'm relatively new here, regardless of what level it says I am, and I have no problem with any of the current rules. I think I posted ten times the first day, just by browsing and finding something interesting. But my real point is this:

Unless you are an active moderator or administrator, or have experience in those utterly thankless jobs, you have no idea. Long ago I was in charge of a very active forum. Yes, I had masochistic tendencies. ANYTHING within reason that helps these folks do their jobs is a good thing. That doesn't mean no discussion, but it does mean being careful what you change when something obviously works.

I'm still not understanding the "10 posts are hard" argument. Within the last page, we have the sweet antique black automobile with the big whitewalls, a Haiku, and my Luigi whitewall video. Not one response to any of those. Come on people. We are lobbing pitches down the center of the plate. If you can't respond and hit those out of the park, I don't know what else to do. The threads are loaded with chances to respond. As Delmar said,

Exactly. I herded cats as a coordinator of the Box O' Crap (TM) for three years and I guarantee that was nothing compared to moderating on this (or any other) forum.

Then I offer some input on their original bike or query and rarely get a response or second question.

I think gumwalls look great. But they do deteriorate quicker in UV light.

I know, I know. Not L'Eroica approved. Pedals must have toe clips and straps or original pedals for older bikes; quick release, clip-less pedals are not allowed; https://eroica.cc/en/gaiole/regulation-eroica-gaiole

But I doubt that I'll ever do an Eroica event. I never liked straps and clip pedals and for years now all of my bikes have had SPDs. I like them. I also like a good reuben.

Getting to 10 posts isn't that easy, you can only do 5 posts a day until then. Of course, that seems easy to a lot of us, but if you want to post a link or a picture, 3 days is a long time to wait.

Fortunately, the memory of the major spam storms is fading, but I know I banned dozens of spammers an hour on a couple of days. A moderator is only allowed to automatically delete 50 posts at a time, and there were some spammers that managed to post more than that in the time between when I discovered their first post and when I managed to ban them. That's pretty impressive. The fact that a lot of anti-spam is automated now makes me very happy.

They only enforce those rules on their registered events.

By the way, I still have the OEM pedals and straps. If I ever sell the bike they will go back on it.

I run clipless pedals on my vintage rides and wouldn't change it. I just try to get color/finish-coordinated ones. Black/carbon for the racy and black-adorned steeds, and polished for ones with lots of polished silver and/or chrome. SPD-SL type.

A good reuben is good, and that Voyageur is stunning!
