Early Trek 750 or 950?
This one is a confusing one for sure. $250 gets you a Portland Flatbar Franken-build Special, and if it's a true upper level frame (which I really think it is), that's a great price. 64cm / 25.5" so of course I'm initially interested--and a number of you may as well be, too. Usual seller picture count, but the Trek cast BB shell lends helpful clues, as do the short reach dual-pivot Shimano 6400-era 600 brake calipers. Maybe JohnDThompson could help un-muddy the waters.
- From my research, early Treks could be custom--to what degree, I do not know, nor will speculate--which include braze-ons (per their catalogs), so that theme I think is good to keep in mind.
- I haven't contacted the seller yet for serial number info--don't want to tip my hand (even if it is on the internet now!
).
- No serial number present on the BB, though it may be faint just below the "TREK" lettering. I jimmied around with Photoshop and got, maybe, an X and an 8...upside down.
- Those letters would fit into the 1976 to late-1980 SN format (LNLNLNN) and not the NNNNNN format of ~1981 onward. That is, of course, if those are actual characters and not my halucinations.
- Short reach brakes with recessed nut mounting (presumably) = race frame, especially during this era. Rear-facing brake caliper is wrong and I pray the frame hasn't been butchered.
- My initial guess is a 1981 750 or 950 ("PRO" in the Trek catalog) due to brake reach, tire clearance, seeming Cinelli CC (sloping) fork crown, graphics, double bottle cage mounts, and semi-vertical rear DO.
- The semi-vertical (Shimano UF) rear dropouts are, to me, obvious enough here as we don't see the obvious characteristics of horizontal dropouts.
- Front derailleur looks to be first-gen Dura-Ace, which would be original spec. Obviously everything else is not, save for perhaps the seatpost and headset.
- Things not a 1981 750/950: chain stay length. By 1981, Trek spec'd 407mm stays (yes, please), down from 415mm in years prior (and in years to come).
- These chain stays look to be the old "original" TX standard of 420mm. And given what looks likea 28mm 700C tire, that bolsters that theory. Could it be older than 1981?
- The frame could have been repainted at some point, with additions of braze-on features. It doesn't look like a repaint, and Trek never spec'd specific colors.

I scored these today, early-70's his-n-hers Western Flyer 5-speeds. They have Lark-W derailleurs, twist-grip shifters and side-pull SAC brakes. They have spent at least the last 20 years in a heated warehouse; the seller says that his grandparents bought them, but they died many years ago. Got the pair for $200. The men's is 22", the women's is 19". (edit: Now that the pic with the SN#'s is blown up, I see it says 1967 under the black marker.)

This has shown up a few times, and I keep hoping the price will drop to $300 or so - high end mixtes just don't show up too often.
Top of the line in its day and in wonderful condition. The work has been done with new tires and tubes and brake and gear cables. This has been set up as a leisure rider with wider leather seat and upright bars (convenient ratchet thumb shifters mounter near brake levers). This can also be a serious tour or Randonneur Bike with longer wheel base, 531 steel tubing and beefed up rear stays for weight. Grand Jubilee is a rare model and the mixte ever rarer, there simply are not a lot of these out there.

For sure a 750/950 frame. Geometry was identical; only the tubing differed. 7nn=Reynolds 531, 9nn=Columbus, probably SP in that size frame.
The TREK-branded Cinelli bottom bracket and Shimano UF dropouts were only used for a short time around 1981. Unlikely to be older than that; older production would have a Cinelli-branded bottom bracket.

I always thought "Terry Geometry" bikes were the ones with a smaller front wheel? This looks more like one of her "normal" looking bikes. I've seen other bikes with the smaller front wheel set ups called "Terry" bikes even ones from Raleigh. Aren't those called that because they are copies?
Either way, the Japanese or Taiwan made (not sure the location) Terry bikes have incredibly durable paint jobs.

Are you between 5'6" and 5'10"? Should fit. That's a very good deal on a bike you could probably enter races on (OK, you might get a few snickers). The Allez is a popular race bike, maybe not the "sport" version, but they are def raceworthy. Hope you're ready!

5'9" so perfect height for me. While I won't be entering a race anytime soon, this bike has my attention though I'm not crazy about driving 200 miles to Illinois to check it out. Have to run it through the Mrs about the price tag. I don't know what this model goes for on the market in decent/good condition.
