You can still find triples with a 52-42-30 if that's a big enough roadie ring for you. And I would pair it with an 11-34 cassette but of course the compromise is that you won't have a very low "low".

Surly213, Try to work out a 20-100 gear inch range, rather than focusing on a chain ring suitable for a roadie.

Seven year old thread. I was surprised to see a photo of a frame that I got rid of years ago.
If you want a road triple, they are around in square taper and possibly other configurations. Most five arm road triples have a 74mm BCD size for the smallest chainring. I use a 24 tooth ring on my road triples for loaded touring.
Most road triples have a small ring that is 30 teeth, but hauling a load of camping gear up a tall hill is a lot easier if you have a smaller ring like a 24. This is a touring forum, so I assume you plan to load the bike down.
I use a 11/32 Sram eight speed cassette in back. My road triples are 46/42/24 for half step plus granny. See photos. I used to use a 52 big ring, but switched to 46. I use that combination of chainrings and cassette on two different touring bikes, thus two photos. First photo is a 26 inch bike, 2nd photo is a 700c bike.
You might be happier with a 39 middle ring compared to the 42 that I use. But it is your call. I admit my 42 is a little higher than most people use for a middle ring.
You said you wanted a big ring, but I think you will find most people prefer a mountain setup for touring instead of a road crank.
I am curious your feelings. I am building an older Long Haul Trucker 26" frame. I am deciding BB and cranks, chainrings and cassette. What is the Widest range "Recommended" without being overkill.
I Would like to run a Big roadie ring and a small in the front, 3 rings. And cassette??
