Davis Phinney Serotta value
Missed out on buying this at the Georgetown, SC Habitat Restore for $100 this past weekend. Looks like the lucky serial ebayer listed it the day after for $500. I have a Ti Serotta and know a bit about the value of those frames, but what about an older steel, SLX, frame? Looks to be well worn, with Dura Ace and has Davis Phinney on the top tube. Asking price $500.

I don't know a lot about Serotta in particular but I would think an SLX frame/fork from a quality builder would be worth $300-$500. The bike is a little ragged and back wheel is useless for most purposes. I wouldn't think that's too bad a price, however, but knowing what he paid for the bike, If I really wanted the bike, I would send him a message with an offer for $350-400 and see what happens.
Also is the NDS chainstay supposed to be crooked like that?

Thanks @spaghetti_legs and @sloar. I agree its pretty ragged and that the rear wheel isnt much more than something to hang on the wall. I might throw an offer to him of $250 cash pickup and see if he bites outside of ebay. I'm not dying to get this frame at the moment, but I've been curious to feel how if an SLX frame rides compared to an SL or EL. If I can get it at a decent price it might be a good test project.

Asymmetrical chainstays are a Phinney design trademark. It was developed with Ben Serotta in an attempt to keep the bottom end from noodling under the leg power of Phinney, who was a well known muscle sprinter. Those frames also tend to be long in the top tube for the size of the seat tube-another Phinney design preference.

Great info on how the frame design. My Ti frame has slightly curved chainstays similar to what that shape is, probably an evolution of that same design. Interesting stuff. Fyi, the bike sold for $500. He was considering a lower offer from me, but also noted the frame rust on the top tube. I was even less enthused when I heard that info, for the price. Thanks for the insight.

Just want to say, I'm sympathetic to your plight/loss due to recent circumstances. "Serial eBayer" here in ATL picked up a 60s Bianchi (Specialissima?) I recently found on OfferUp. I offered more than full price because I knew what it was, seller wouldn't budge, had someone waiting. I actually wanted it for a project, let that be known, and warned someone was trying to make $$ off it, I'd actually give what it's wroth. He sold to the other person 4 days after I reached out, and within 24 hours it was up on eBay, sold for $700-800.

Yep @francophile, its always a bitter pill to lose a great find. Planned to give Habitat a more honest price/donation because I admire the work they do. They also got a Harry Havnoonian Ti bike in the same donation. I dont know anything about his shop, but it was clearly a special donation. All that being said, flipping a good deal isn't a crime. i've done it myself. Not the same circumstances but to each his own.

Not scoring the Bianchi was pivotal in my being able to pick up the other two, so a silver lining was found.It's not uncommon to stumble across a treasure chest when walking away from a couple of gems
