Inspired by the "Old ads and jingles" thread how about the WORST songs to get stuck in your head?
Sometimes I'll get a lousy song playing an endless loop. It can give me a headache if I can't get rid of it quickly enough.

My entry for the "Worst Song Of All Time".......

My late mother, who worked the night shift as a nurse, had a hard and fast rule. "No Singing In The Morning." A true Swede, she was. And I agree, someone singing is the last freaking thing I wanna hear first thing in the morning. Especially Really Bad Singing.

I wish supermarkets and department stores would turn the damned classic rock music off. Every annoying song from Linda Ronstadt's "You're No Good" to Carly Simon's "You're So Vain" to Harry Chapin's "Cat's In The Cradle" is carefully selected by drooling morons with college degrees, clipboards and white lab coats, to inflict maximum musical torture on anyone unfortunate enough to have lived through the 1970's. Every painful memory from that era is vividly re-lived while you decide which idiotic breakfast cereal to buy.

Why some people need musical accompaniment while buying their chips, sodas, and carcinogenic TV dinners, I will never understand. Is it that awful to have to listen to your own thoughts while shopping, without awful music completely drowning them out?

The remedy: listen to other music. Even music without singing. Early morning? Aaron Copeland's "Fanfare for the Common Man". Short enough and that will wake you up.

If you want a different style, try Santana's "Samba Pa Ti".

Or something with a little lyrics but lots of guitar and accompaniment: Emerson Lake & Palmer's "From The Beginning".

Something lyrical, jazzy, lots of harmonics? Manhattan Transfer's "Birdland".

About 10 years ago I walked into a local grocery store when they first opened (about 6AM) and AC/DC was blasting out across the audio system. I guess the folks in there doing the overnight stocking had switched out the music to their own tastes. It sure put a smile on my face to hear something different!

Great musical picks, especially "Fanfare". Why the hell aren't YOU the person choosing what music they play at the supermarket?

I feel like any day now, given the demographics in my area, I will walk into a store and they will have switched over permanently to accordion and tuba music, all sung in Spanish. As much as I hate classic rock AND Mexican music, the Mexican music would still be preferable.

I spontaneously aged a few years the first time I heard a Muzak version of a Green Day song playing in a supermarket.

It happened again when I tuned to the local "oldies" station-- the one that used to play the Big Bopper, Chuck Berry, etc... and once again, a Green Day song was playing.

I also have to agree with @flip_Flop_Rider in post #4 . Whoooaaa here she comes, watch out boy she'll chew you up...

Honorable mention to I Can't Go for That (No Can Do) by the same fellas. Gets in your head.

Whenever I hear a Hall and Oates song playing in a store, I'm "hall and ass", trying to get out of that torture chamber as fast as possible. Those guys are TERRIBLE. Who picks these damned songs anyway?

I was at a wedding reception outdoors (Newport Beach fancy schmancy) and there was a small ensemble of musicians. One was a harpist (older guy) who played "La Bamba". So at the break I went up to him and said: "You played La Bamba on the harp". He responded: "it was composed for the harp". Big surprise to me! It comes from a different region of Mexico, Vera Cruz which is way south and part of the Caribbeans region.

No, its not Mariachi music and the musicians are not dressed in black and silver with loud trumpets.

For music that's played in public spaces, it's classical, or GTFO. Any other kind of music will always offend someone. Classical offends no one, except idiots.

It helps to have a "trump," song or artist, something you like so much that it overrides whatever musical tripe has lodged in your noggin. Whenever I get an annoying song stuck in my head I replace it with something by Johnny Cash and it's all better.
