Silly Bike Bling Question

Hi Everyone,

I have a no name, black aluminum crank set on a ISO taper bottom bracket. This is attached to a 48t Mojo chain ring. I am pretty darn happy with the set up, and it looks good against brushed titanium, but, I have blue highlights on my saddle and black and blue bar tape. So, as my wife has noticed--and bless her for even entertaining this silly upgrade--blue crank arms might look really, really good to finish off the triangle of blue from the seat to crank to handlebars.

Any advice on where to hunt down some blue crank arms? I've found Sugino RD2s on Ebay, but I am a little wary of mixing JIS with ISO, even with Sheldon Brown's reassurance that it will be fine. Miche's Primato Advanced also don't look half bad...

Okay, so at least two options. Anyone know where to find some cheaper blue cranks that don't stink?

Well, first off you are almost certainly going to need a different bottom bracket if you change brand and model of crankset. It’s not just ISO vs JIS, but also the length of the spindle. As to good quality affordable cranksets available in different colors, there is Sugino Messenger, that uses a 103mm JIS square taper bottom bracket.

I ruined two perfectly good cranksets mixing JIS cranks on ISO taper axles. A good alternative would be getting an italian thread BB with JIS taper axles.

Well, then the next thing the OP needs to do is check his bottom bracket shell, amirite?

Hey Everyone,

So, thank you, all, for the very helpful feedback. It seems like:

1_There is a very good chance that my ISO bottom bracket won't even work with the Miche ISO crank arms that Retrogression still stocks.
2_When in doubt, run a full Miche or a full Sugino crank set.
3_If I am happy with my current set up--which I really am--don't mess with it. If the cranks are stiff, the chain line is straight, and the gear ratio is working for me, keep it all.

It appears that cranks and bottom brackets are not worth messing with for aesthetic gains...
