Looking for fender advice
Any advice on a good solid full fender set for a 700 42 tire that wont break the bank?

That size tires....I'd look for 60mm fenders, like PlanetBike Cascadia or Velo-Orange

https://velo-orange.com/collections/...m-fenders-700c
The problem with 50mm class fenders like say the Velo-Orange, IME the width measurement is to the outside of the fender, not the inside rim--result being a 42mm tire will rub if fitted closely. The VO are stiffer and a better product--far beefier stays (5mm rod) as opposed to the cheapo clothes-hanger wire used on PlanetBike.

Velo-Orange is the best option. I've used the 52mm Zepplin models with 650bx47 front and 650bx42 rear. The fenders are stiff enough there's no rub even on rough gravel and singletrack. As noted above, the measurement is inside width, I get a lot of dust off the sides of the fenders that flows around in the pressure zone and coats up the bike in weird places because the 47mm tire is so close to the fender sides.
For 42mm tires I think you'll be fine with the 700c 52mm Zepplin models. The next size up, 63 is too wide for a lot of bikes.

I like SKS plastic (trekking) fenders - but I'm riding mud/dirt on my gravel bike and don't really want a fender that goes down low on my rear wheel. I'm a little too rough on my gravel bike for metal (although SKS makes just about any style you want - they are German, and all non race bikes are sold with fenders in Germany). They come in just about any size you need, but I use the 47 size for my 40mm tires (that would work for you). $27 bucks ain't bad either. You can run them with or without the fender stays.

I run the 700c 52mm Velo Orange Zeppelins. My wheelsets are outfitted with 700x38 and 650x48. These fenders work nicely with both setups. Hope this helps!
