Interchangeable Cassettes

So I will be riding in my first crit next weekend and I have a question regarding wheels for the wheel pit. I'm currently riding on 10 speed SRAM and I have an older 7 speed shimano wheel set from my old bike. Would there be any chance that the 7 speed cassette will work with the 10 speed derailleur?

I'm guessing the answer I will get is no, so if that is the case does anyone know the best place to find a cheap used cassette that I can put on my spare wheel set?

Thanks

Doesn't sound possible, but if it were at minimum you'd need a longer free body and a longer axel.

No. Your shifters are also part of the problem. Changing them on a free-lap would be... time-consuming.

To find cheapest cassettes, I use Google Shopping. You could also try CraigsList for your area. The cheapest cassettes I can usually find are in the $50-60 range. Cheapest SRAM cassette I found (I prefer SRAM cassette's with my Ultegra setup) was one I found at Performance Bikes. It was on a sale. I haven't found it again.

Best solution, though: check at your LBS. Racers should support LBS's so when you need something last-second, they will be more inclined to help you.

It's not just a matter of buying a new cassette, like gsteinb said, you won't be able to put a 10-speed cassette on the 7-speed wheel.

In other words, you can't use the rear wheel as a pit wheel.

I got an ultegra 10 speed from ebay for like $55. I bet you can get tiagra or 105 for around $30.

front wheel should work, you can just buy a spare rear wheel with a cheapo cassette to use as a backup. aside from just pit wheels, it's good to have a backup to use when needed.

Gsteinb giving mechanical advice is hilarious. I'm surprised he even knows what a cassette is. He is right about this one, though. Even a blind squirrel gets a nut every once in a while.

Put the front in the pits and pray. Get a spare like MDcatV says. I bought my trainer wheel brand new on Amazon for $75 shipped.

7-speed wheel won't fit on your 10-speed bike without lots of work. The spacing between the dropouts for 7-speed is less than 10-speed. If I were in your position, I would either borrow a rear from someone for my spare or go without.

Another option is to replace the hub, nipples, spokes, cassette, and the rim. You should be fine with the same rim tape though.

You can use the 7 speed wheel. After you install it, shift around until you find the least noisy, least skipping gear. Then leave it in that gear.
