$10k budget for a new bike

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How about a lovely pair of gold plated roller skates?

Why even put a limit on 10k. Have your friend reach for the top and get one of these at 40k:

This. Unless she knows up front that conventional geo won't work, get a decent off-the-shelf bike for $1000 or so. Ride it for a few months, figure out what you like and don't. Then go blow your load on a custom geometry bike with RedDuraRecord and Zipp Wallet Weaponry wheels.

Why is it that very expensive bikes are almost always photographed with valve caps? Must be going for the Fred market...

I put caps on all my bikes because they are more aero. Aero trumps the extra weight. I use colored ones to match each's scheme. This is much less Fred than having 9,355 posts.

You have any data to support that valve caps are more aero than uncovered? Would love to see the boundary layer analysis.

And there you get to the heart of it.

You've got to have the dimpled valve covers, or the laminar air flow issues kill the advantage.

I only have empirical data. Same bike+tire pressure, average speed over an ~18 mile hilly loop: 15 rides with caps - 16.34 mph, 11 w/o caps 16.08. There you have it.

They're ribbed, ribs > dimples.

Because there could be nothing that could affect this data like wind or temperature...

Funny you mentioned that. I got a high end bike this summer from a very good shop (owners are in nationally known for training and racing and sponsor a good team) and it came with valve caps. So I thought who am I to question?

There are like 7 new pages since I last checked in on this thread. I'm not about to read all that.

Has she bought a bike yet?

Tongue-in-cheekedness is another independent variable.
