Campy NR hub 6 speed spacing question....
I'm setting up a rear hub for 6 speed spacing (Raleigh Pro), which should be right at 126mm between the dropouts. My axle length measures around 134.3, and my locknut-to-locknut distance is about 126.5. That leaves just short of 8 (7.8)mm left to be split between drive side and non-drive side (about 3.9mm each). Question - is ~4mm wide enough to be safe in the dropouts? Thanks for any advice....

4mm is ok IF your QR's are tight[1]. More would be nice, if the frame is at all narrow I'd be taking out the washers.

If you were north of 200# then buy a new axle, Wheels mfg are good.

Thanks for the advice ... I might take out a washer to get an addiional ~1mm on both sides.... I think I should be OK on the axle, I'm a bit less than 150lb

What's Sheldon say? 2-3mm of axle outside each locknut is plenty long enough.
Personally I like 4-5mm. It gives me the warm fuzzies.
What's also important is that my rear cluster has exactly enough room for the chain to clear the stays when it's on the small cog and big ring. So I have to fit the freewheel, derailer and chain before I'm comfortable making the final adjustments to the hub spacing and wheel dish.

Good advice SurferRosa, I agree. I did check Sheldon, and it just would not make me comfortable riding to have that minimal amount under the dropouts....

I'd expect a Campy 6 speed hub to show 125 mm OLD, not 126.55. How accurate is the micrometer?

Ironically, just after reading Repechage's note above about replacing the axle (though I am well south of 200 lb), I slide the QR through the axle and it bound up. Turns out this axle came to me already slightly bent. So, I bought a new Wheel Industries axle - I was fortunate to find a 137mm, which is a bit longer than the original Campy, but does leave a bit more on the ends, so that was good.... Thanks !
