Puchultima, please post pictures and/or details, including serial number, frame and fork tubing decals, and components, on your Capo. Mine, as an American export model, came with 27" wheels, Weinmann 999 centerpulls, Campag. Record high-flange hubs and Gran Sport derailleurs, a long-reach GB stem, and Agrati cottered steel cranks. My serial number, on which I base my model year estimate, is 40324. All of the 30th anniversary 1960 Capos I have seen in California have serial numbers in the 452xx or 453xx range; I owned 45211 until the frame failed following a crash repair. Since Harald "Hary Capo" Cap has told me that his father's peak production was around 5K units per year, I figure mine is a late 1958 or a 1959, but we should compare notes. The 1960 Capos also have metal trim pieces brazed to the tops of the seat stays, the rear dropouts, and the top of the sloping Cinelli-style fork crown.
Although all of the Capos I have seen in the U.S. have the venerable diagonally-printed Reynolds 531 butted-frame-forks-and-stays decals and a little Reynolds triangle on one fork blade, one of my friends swears his came with a (now-obliterated) horizontally-printed 531 decal, indicating either straight gauge tubing (his recollection) or 531 main triangle only.

That's a beauty, Puchultima. Does that frame have the star cutout on the bottom of the bottom bracket?

That is one beautiful bike. Thanks again for the photos. The Puch and Austro-Daimlers were nice in the day and can be made better with the wheelsets and components available today.

Greetings,
I have a Puch Ultima Mistral SL, which I bought new in 1983, as a frameset only, finished in 'smoked chrome.' Since I worked at the bike shop, "Rainbow Racing" in Athens, Ohio, I had the pick of all the best parts, built my own wheels, and we had a really good team, "Rainbow Velo Sport." 8.7 kg.
I thought I might be able to learn more about this bike, as apparently it's a rare deal, kinda like an old Ferrari? Except it was made in Germany.
I have it on the turbo, which I converted to use the Minoura ICE system, and I only use it in the winter for exercise.

There are more threads on Austro Daimler than Puch on this site. Lots of info from serial number database references to ride impressions from owners. Both Puch and AD came out of the same Austrian factory. AD was supposedly for 'American-only' distribution, some Puchs must have also made it across the pond.
I really like my early 80s Olympian (531DB f/f), and the Ultima was even higher up the product line. Hopefully yours will see more than trainer duties.
Please give us more detailed frame shots.
Welcome to BikeForums & C&V.

Here's a link to '81 Puch catalogue with specifications for each model. Check Bulgier.net for AD catalogues as well.

What do you mean by detailed frame shots? To me, it looks like any other frame I've ever seen, except for the Cannondales.
Mine is now a replacement after the chainstay broke in a race. I had it sent back to the factory and they sent me a new frame that is green-on-chrome. The first frame must be what they called, "Mistral Ultima Vent Noir."

Incidentally, when I bought the bike, I was told it was made by a company that was part of the Daimler-Benz corporation, so I always envisioned some guy in a corner room somewhere, with a torch, a pile of tubes, a bottle of wine, and some loud Italian music playing while he brazed tubes into framesets, while cars rolled by.

OK... so I started with the Mistral Ultima "Vent Noir," but the factory sent me a chromed frame painted green as a replacement. What is the green colour called? Is my current frameset still a Vent Noir? I wasn't aware that they chromed all the Ultima frames, painted, or not.
I never even thought of getting the number from the bottom of the BB; it's bolted to the Turbo.
I used to tell people that the gold accent paint around the lugs was real gold.
The bike and the parts were no nice-looking that I took a close-up photo of the SR rear derailleur and sent copies for Christmas as "picture" postcards.
