Flatfree wheelset.

I just cam across this. There are no tubes. The put screws and nails thru the tire and rides his bike. There is a video at the link below.

I find it a little bit disingenuous that all the positive quotes listed at the end were made about Hutchinson and their tire, not about this guy's company/idea/rim.

What's there to kickstart? It sounds like he's selling an existing product pre-mounted on a wheel. Also, this statement "The problem is that it ONLY fits on a very specific sized rim (probably not what's on your bike...)" is patently false.

From here you can get solid tubes in 26 sizes.

I can't believe people have given up over 1600 of their dollars for that "idea".

Honestly, flats are not nearly as big of a problem as people make them out to be. Get good tires, keep them at the right pressure (LOL @ me), and you're set. This is a solution in search of a problem.

This is especially the case if you live/bike in an urban area. I always carry tools and a spare tube, but I have plenty of friends with the mindset of "hey, if I get a flat I'll throw the bike on the bus and take it to a shop later." Which totally works.

Only issue I ever had was when wife bought used velocity wheelset with crappy rim tape. Had 2 flats in a row before I figured out what the issue was and bought proper tape and retaped them. Zero flats since.

My only concern is an air pump. I can easily carry a lever and a wrench and a tube, but I don't because I don't have an air pump. So I could change the flat, but I'd still have a flat uncompromised tube.

Suggestions? I think I do have a small hand pump somewhere but it was a budget model and I don't think it can even hit 85psi

They will add about 1400 grams to each wheel.
2 X 1400g = 2800g = 6.2lbs

That is significant.

Heh, yeah the other gif is Clark Kent ripping off his coat to reveal his Superman costume and then flying away all cool.
But it didn't pan out (host Tripod apparently blocks use) so then I posted the alcoholic superman gif instead.

what i would really like is a bike sized version of fix-a-flat just to get to a shop or home...

does such a thing exist? for presta valves? & could it be effective for more than a few miles?

I tried it once on a bike with schraeder valves and it didn't work. I had green **** spread all through my frame and up and down my back after a mile and still had a flat tire and had to walk it home. It might have been that the hole was to big in the tire but I think the stuff just made it worse if anything.

Stan's No Tubes sealant does occasionally work in a standard clincher with a tube but it's not worth the trouble IMO.

I'd speculate that it is probably because a bicycle innertube stretches a lot more, when inflated, than a car tire. The fix-a-flat goo will just blow through the hole, stretching it as it goes

i run ghetto tubeless on my mtb quite happily. after a spate of flats on my "road" (meaning fg) bike, in a paroxysm of creativity that i was sure would solve the problem, i tried loading some leftover stan's into a couple of those tubes...what a disaster

but i do still occasionally get the impulse to try converting that bike to tubeless properly, maybe next time i put on new tires...
