2016 Olympic Equipment

I imagine that lots of new equipment will show up at the Olympics in a couple of months. A lot of it is starting to show up on the web. Feel free to post (or repost) what you find here.

I have a sweet pic somewhere of the "new" LOOK that is allegedly just the OLD LOOK with no paint. Once I find it I'll post.

Planet x five spoke wheel(585g)- I am not sure this will be stiff enough for sprinters, because it's only 585g.
Planet X 5 Spoke Full Carbon Aero Track Front Wheel | Planet X
Planet x disc wheel
Planet X Carbon Rear Disc Wheel Track or Road | Planet X

I would rather buy Navigator N5 and disc wheel.
I think Navigator has better price, but they are all sold out.....

I wonder how the Planet rear wheel fits both road and track hub widths.

The planet front wheel appears to lack a serrated nut on one side.

Navigator has proper track hubs with 15mm nuts. PlanetX uses road hubs and skewers. There's no way in hell I'd use a disc on the track using a skewer.

They are road wheels that they are selling in the track section on the website. Weak.

I am dubious of the Planet X 5 spoke weight. A Mavic IO weights (the rio version) 750 grams and both the spoke and the rim are shallower on the Mavic than the Planet X. Meanwhile a front Mavic Ksyrium pro carbon tubular front wheel is 515 grams.

Maybe it comes with track axels, but I pretty sure nobody is going to buy Planet X disc wheel over Navigator.
I hope Navigator starts selling their rear disc wheel and front 5 spoke wheel(tubular) again

I'm a little bit confused by the page; they say the hub has a "Swapable axle from QR to track nut", yet the image of the track axle conversion quite clearly shows no threads for any sort of nuts. I would be amazed if Planet X lacked the common sense to make sure to use axle nuts on a track wheel. The front wheel meanwhile, looks to only be skewer compatible but they'll provide you with a locking skewer if you're getting a track version.

+1, I once again wish that track products that these companies provide weren't simply road products adapted for track. What's so hard about putting a proper track axle on in the first place?

As a side note, those front wheels look to be similar if not from the same mold as the FFWD Five-T. While I'm sure the shape is fine, if a bit sail-like and hard to handle on blowy outdoor tracks, it differs considerably in appearance from the five spoke in the background of the instagram video that @gycho77 provided. That five spoke looked to have proportions more similar to the Mavic iO. Perhaps Planet X has some nicer wheels than we're seeing in the pipeline?

Could they not get away with using something like Corima, with the Mavic Track bolts and an internal thread?

It's not a Boa, it's Sidis version. They're somewhat better.

I think that's an improvement. I really think there might be improvments for "sprint" shoes if the shoe laces/straps mounted at the carbon base of the shoe and wrapped over to at attached to the carbon base on the other side of the shoe.

This design is similar, but for a different reason. It seems that the rationale is to be more aero by hiding the buckle.

I think that the upstroke is in the "1% incremental gains" area for TT riders and in a 10-20% gains area for standing starts for sprinters. I understand that studies have shown that most elite athletes push most of the time, but the upstroke is still important. I mean, if you are gonna do (or wish to do) wind tunnel testing and what not. Why not make sure that your attachment to your bike is as free from loss as possible?

The first second or two of a 500M, kilo, team sprint, match sprint jump, etc... are key to the effort.

Then there is the lack of aerodynamic consideration of (most) shoes.

If you are specializing in time trials. Your legs and feet make a lot of turbulence that is slowing you down. These convenient straps aren't helping:

They may be easy to reach and adjust if you are on a 3 hour road ride and your feet are swelling and you want to adjust them while riding. But, on the track, that's not something you can do. So, why take the aero "penalty" (drag) of the ridges from the velcro straps that churn up the air 120 times/minute? So, if you are into time trials (road, enduro, or sprint) don't choose shoes like this.

I dig what others are doing with having smooth tops.

Love the CF tub shoes. I think there could be a more 'reliable' design there but really they only need to last a weekend (or less). I could see bont maybe doing a mainstream version like that.

Cervelo has finally revealed the T5. I got a 'peak' of it pieces of it a couple months back and was told not to breath a word of it, like it was some secret that they would be coming out with SOMETHING to replace the 8 year old T4 frame they had GB riding up until now. I mean they signed with the team that notoriously spends the most money possible...

https://www.cervelo.com/en-ca/track/t-series/t5gb

The T5 (albeit a Taiwan built version with cheaper materials) will be available shortly after the games to meet the peak in track bike demands on Olympic years.

Although how slow that bike must be with the crank on right side!

Those carbon shoes look incredibly uncomfortable. But I guess for a few minutes at a time it doesn't matter much. They certainly look fast (if ugly).

They're custom molded to each rider. There's possibly nothing that's more comfortable!

On another note, the Cervelo sprint bike no longer appears to be the "flavour of the month"

Molded won't help if the inside is just bare carbon.

The reason for padding inside shoes is to distribute the pressure of the closing mechanism (laces, straps, ratchets, boas...). If a bare carbon shoe is custom molded, it will distribute pressure evenly across the whole top, bottom, or side of the foot. Better fit means less padding is needed. A perfect custom fit virtually eliminates the need for padding. At most you would need a slim sock to accomodate the small movements of the foot as you pedal.

Adam Hansen has ridden shoes just like this for the length of the Tour de France. In fact, he makes them for himself. At that level, he could ride any pair he wants, but chooses a design like this.
