Teledyne Titan Frameset - $1,150 (Monson)

Teledyne Titan Frameset.

It is what they called a 24"/61cm measured c-top. The top tube is 57cm c-c. English threaded BB + HS. Includes frame/fork and hardware shown. Also will include the hard to find oversize top tube brake cable clips. I am a recently retired bike shop owner of 48 years in business. I sold this frame to the original owner and recently reacquired it. It appeared to have low use and is in very nice condition.

$1150 to me includes freight in the 48.

I think they had a tendency to crack at the crimp where the downtube cable stop is clamped on.

Really? I've read of issues with the forks and BB's of the early builds. How many failed at what you call the "crimping?" Unless thoroughly annealed, doesn't every bike with downtube shifter braze-ons have a stress point increasing the probability of failure there?

This one is the 2,169th. Mine is the 2,161st. As far as I know Teledyne produced fewer than 2500. I've read most issues were resolved by the end of the production run. Mine doesn't have a crack. This one doesn't appear to be cracked. However, the price is high. They can be had for much less, no doubt because baseless rumours swirl about them.

They are a cool and different bike.

Decent, but not great, vintage condition. Paint is just OK, with some marks and light surface rust showing. Pedals are missing their dust caps (I can provide you a pair of plastic pedals to get you started). A fairly well used bike. Tubes do hold air (for now!). Seat is in just decent shape. As was the style with these Centurion bikes, the steering geometry is a bit steep, which makes the steering a little more twitchy than the typical bike of the era. So it turns into a curve fast, but you have to pay attention to the bike at all times. It is not a leisurely cruiser!!

This bike is at least 30 years old and has probably never been serviced. Like ANY unmaintained bike of this vintage, this one will require some reconditioning to be ridden. Don't believe anyone who tells you otherwise! At a minimum, it will need new tires and tubes. The wheel bearings, headset, and bottom bracket really should have the grease replaced as well. I suggest having a good bike shop do those things, unless you have the proper tools and knowledge to do it yourself. Poor repairs can be dangerous!! Brake and shifter cables should also be cleaned and lubed. Expect to spend about $100 to $150 (my estimate) to recondition this bike if you have a shop do it. If you do the work yourself, expect to spend about $60 for basic tires and tubes.

I believe this bike has 700x23C tires on it, as was typical of the time it was built. I suggest replacing them with 700x25C or even 700x28C (if they will fit). That will provide a more comfortable ride, and you wont be any slower. Will probably get fewer flats too.

Again, any unmaintained bike of this age will need these minor repairs and maintenance!! Don't let anyone tell you they do not!!

I saw the one way back when before the interwebs and before everyone wore a camera on a hip and the "crimp" (what came to mind as I was typing) or swage or butt or indentation or whatever you want to call it is where the crack occurred. That might be an inadequate sample but one out of a couple of thousand is probably not bad. They were definitely cool, right up there with the Exxon Graftek, but I never found one in my size when I was in a serious acquisition mode.

First off, please accept my apology for snapping at you. I was a little under the weather when I wrote that, though that's no excuse.

I went through the registry at Classic Rendezvous and the remarks for Number 144, (Serial 2082), are relevant: "May, 1976 w/original fork and Teledyne Titan bbracket axle. Frame down tube has a crack around the swaged shift lever area that was repaired by Aerojet using the argon gas environment method." (sic) Many mention "no cracks" and one owner notes: "All original frame and fork. "Every time I ride it anyone who recognizes the frame asks if it ever cracked...""

I suppose Teledyne Titans will always be fodder for Wise Crackers?

"Zebulon" in Hebrew means exaltation or refers to a small dwelling. (Zebulon is the small town outside Raleigh where the bike resides.)

I'm no engineer but the first time I saw a Titan I could not believe that tube area could not be problematic. Hope yours continues to survive.
