Bianchi Specialissima X3

Are you sure it is a "D"? I have two Bianchi X3 Specialissima in a claimed 61cm-- measures 59.5cm c-c (which don't fit me-- looking for something smaller and your 59 might be a 57.5 which would be closer) and one of my bikes LOOKS like a "D" but upon further reflection (pun intended) when the light finally hits it right, I can see that it is in fact a "B". Both are "B"

one is "B. 202" and the other is "B. 211" and neither have a prefix to the B and the "." is quite pronounced. Both are X3 Specialissima, but were likely framesets and not the complete bikes that were sold with "X3" decals on the top tube.

No pump peg and only 1 set of water bottle bosses...

And I'm in the same boat as you: I can't post photos yet either.

If they also used in 1940 that certainly confirms the bike came with both Mod 39 and then Mod 50. Thanks for you help so far and for anything further you can provide.

The 1949 team bicycles used Simplex derailleurs and matching rear dropouts, as a result of a contract that Lucien Juy orchestrated with Fausto Coppi. There was no consumer version of these bicycles, so I'd be reluctant to call them Folgorissima. However, Coppi's actual bicycles from the 1949 Giro d'Italia and Tour de France have survived (verified from serial number recorded in diaries kept by the team mechanic). These bicycles have Universal Model 39 calipers and extant photos from 1949 (easily verified by the presence of Simplex derailleurs) corroborate the brake caliper model. Given that the Folgorissima was the closest consumer equivalent, there is no reason to expect the early Folgorissima that started appearing in mid-1949 would not have used these brakes prior to availability of the Model 50 calipers.

I went back and checked the Ebay photos and the claimed Folgorissima does have Model 39 calipers but the frame serial number is actually higher than the one with Model 50 calipers that appears on the Classic Lightweights website. I don't know which bicycle has the correct calipers or whether it's a case both being correct and Bianchi not rotating their stock.

About a decade ago, Italian bicycle expert Paolo Tullini published a booklet dedicated solely to the Folgorissima and Paris-Roubbaix models. It may contain the definitive evidence for which you are searching.

Absolutely amazing advice and thank you for taking the time. Now have somewhere to start looking and suspect you are right the bike actually had both brakes given when it was first produced the Mod 50 did not exist. Cant thank you enough.

Based on the serial number, what you have is a 1984 model, not 1983.

Identification Help

Hi! I just had a gold Bianchi Piaggio but I can’t find a lot of information about it. And most of all I don’t see a serial number.

I think it’s from 1984. The color is gold, the bike has few decals: a piaggio one in front of the bike, a « made in Italia » one, and two Bianchi.Regarding to the gear, it has:
-Ofméga Bianchi graved crankset
- a Simplex bike derailleur

- Universal brake calipers

- Modolo brakes

- ITM handlebar

- saddle stem: GS

-an Italia Sprint seat

Mavic Sport wheels

I have pictures if you nees but I am not sure if I have the right to post those as I am a newbie.

Welcome to the forums. What country are you and the bike in?

Since your new you can't post pics yet but ypou can upload them and we can look for them. Click on the little picture icon on the top of the window and it is rather easy to follow

I have just received a Bianchi and am trying to identify it.

Because I am unable to upload pictures to the forum yet I'll describe what I can.

This is a red frame with silver/chrome on the bottom of the front forks.
Serial Number stamped on the bottom of the frame is CS305714 - I'm guessing 1983?
There is a "special" sticker near the front on the top tube - name of the model?
Sticker saying "built with 022 ISHIWATA CrMo Double Butted Tubes
Piaggio sticker in gold
Suntour ARX 6-speed rear rerailleur
Suntour ARX front derailleur
Dia-Compe brakes

Am I right in the year and model of the bike? If so, I haven't been able to find any information online about it. If I'm not right, can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

All right, I’m based in France. It’s also where I found the Bianchi.
I tried to upload some pictures, can you find it?

Bianchi specs and model names vary significantly from one market to another. With this being a French model, I wouldn't even want to guess at the actual model name. Bianchi manufactured, Piaggio era models typically have the serial number stamped in two sections, on each side of the seat lug, However, this appears to be a contract manufactured model from Chiorda. It's definitely entry level and almost certainly hi-tensile steel based on the stamped dropouts, bulge formed head tube and lack of braze-ons, except for the top tube cable tunnels, Those Simplex Prestige derailleurs weren't manufactured past 1982, so it should be very early 1980s, assuming they are OEM.

It appears it could be a Bianchi Sprint from 1978.
I’ll look for the serial number

Bianchi were not using top tube cable tunnels in 1978, even on the pro team models, and they would not have had a Piaggio decal. The frame characteristics and components point to very early 1980s.

Hello,
My first post here.
I am amazed with the knowledge of some of people here. It is fantastic.
I purchased my Bianchi about 15 years ago and it still rides very nice. Unfortunately I don't know anything about this bike. All components are Shimano 600 Arabesque (except pedals). Serial number under the BB is AS3008274. Paint is dark brown. Have no clue what is the model and year of manufacture. It is purchased in Canada. What would be the price today?

Thanks,
Milos

Welcome to the forums. Your bicycle is a 1983, Japanese manufactured, mid-range model. It is roughly equivalent to the USA market Bianchi Limited. Most members will be reluctant to provide an assessment without pictures and your location, as cosmetic and mechanical condition are the prime factors in determining value, which can also vary significantly from city to city.

How or where do you find the serial numbers.... I bought mine in Italy in around 1986... it's red with white seat and handles.

Given that you bought in Italy during 1986, it's unlikely to be Asian manufacture. A mid-range or high end, Italian manufactured model of this era will typically have the S/N stamped on the underside of the bottom bracket shell, However, if it sat around in the shop for a couple of years, it may be on the seat lug. If it's an entry level, Italian manufactured frame with the Calibrati 1-20 tubeset, it was likely contract manufactured by Chiorda, in which case the S/N should be on the front of the upper, head lug. Many of the Chiorda manufactured models used a bulge formed head tube, so it may not use actual lugs but faux lugs.

Please note that the S/N does not include model information and many Italian market models used different model names than the USA market. Consequently, identification may be complicated beyond determination of manufacturer, year, level and an equivalent USA market model

HI T-Mar,

Thank you very much for information. My impression is that parts are in good condition. Chain stay is a bit rusty, but after so many years...It would be nice to have new paint. Rear derailleur may have week spring. Trying to figure out why sometimes chain will slip when changing speed. Put new chain and cassette, but problem is still there. Compared the strength of the springs between Shimano 600 and 105, and 600 is weaker. Is it a standard problem that spring gets weaker?

Well, regarding the photos, I am not allowed to post photos and URL to photos unless I have more than 10 posts. I will post them when I reach that number.

Thanks
Milos

Hi everybody, i just discovered this forum.
I'm trying to buy a Bianchi from a guy in internet here in Barcelona/Spain and i need help identifying the model.
The current owner says its from 1993-1994, with a Columbus frame and complete Campagnolo group. The shift gears are not in the downtube but in the handlebars.
I'm adding some images here. This is the album url with the pictures: album / 19221641
Any help is appreciated. Thanks a lot!

In most markets the subject bicycle appears to have marketed simply as the Minimax or MMX. 1993-1994 is in the ballpark as it has the 1992-1993 Campione del Mondo decal. Typically they were equipped with Campagnolo Record, which the subject bicycle does not have. However, they were also offered as a frameset, so they often surface with other groups.
