Where Did You Ride or Walk Today?

For a few weeks I'd lost interest in my plan to ride every street in a defined section of the city between my office and house. Today, I finished work a bit early so I decided to work on the the bottom right corner of the map. That's right in the downtown business district, and the pavement is awful, so I've been kind of avoiding it unless I had a specific errand there, but today I had my winter commuter with fatter tires because my summer bike had a flat this morning, so I figured it was a good chance to do it. I forgot to look at the map on computer before I left the office, but I remembered some of the missisng segments. Went I got home and checked, I saw I had remembered correctly. There are still four small scattered missing pieces down there, but I may get them all with a little serpentine detour on Friday, when I have to go to the other office site near that side of the map.
There's still another big chunk in the upper middle to work on.

I did something like that when I lived in Manitoba ... rode every paved country road within a 200 km radius of Winnipeg.

Lunchtime walks every day this week except for Thursday ... on Thursday I was in the hospital for a minor surgical procedure and wasn't up to much in the way of walking.

Lets see. . . a job interview (a total waste to time) then to a park to play disc golf for an hour.

Disc golf, a sport that consists of tossing discs (Frisbee like objects) from predefined points to predefined targets (baskets).

More walking today!! This morning I walked from home to my medical centre, a little over 2 km. It was a beautiful morning although quite chilly. I was compelled to walk quite briskly.
And again at lunch ... just having a wander around downtown.

2.7 km walk yesterday ... to go to the Officeworks to pick up a few stationery supplies.
3.6 km walk around town today ...
My next photography assignment is "Signs" ... so I was taking pictures of signs today at lunch, coming up with ideas.

I had to deviate a bit on my route to work yesterday due to road repair. I also meandered a bit on the way home, still colouring in bits and pieces of the map between my house and office. So about 2 km extra on my commute - not much!

I did a lot of randonneuring and other long distance events. And when I wasn't doing events, I would just head out and do a century or double century on a Saturday by myself or with anyone who wanted to come with me.
But I also did a few hub-and-spoke style camping tours further out ... usually to train on hills.

Walking stats this week ...
Monday = 3.1 km
Tuesday = 8.4 km
Wednesday = 4.1 km
Thursday = 9.4 km
Friday = 4.3 km
Total: 29.3 km
Of that, 11.9 km were inside on the treadmill and 17.4 km were outside in the morning or at lunch. We also cycled outside on Sunday. We're just building up again after taking a bit of a break in the early part of the winter (I was quite ill for a long time, from early May), and we will start including other gym activities in our routine soon. Rowan has started with that ... he swam 1 km yesterday.
Today's lunchtime walk provided me with interesting weather ... warm sunshine, warm sunshine plus raindrops apparently out of a blue sky, a sudden thick cloud with a bit of a shower, back to warm sunshine again ... and rainbows everywhere.
From today's lunchtime walk ... there is quite a bit of snow on Mt Wellington ...

Seven loops of Poplar Plains Rd. hill to work on fitness yesterday. Some random other guy (also a greybeard, like me) doing a longer loop, kept up with me, so I'm not that fast. However I got the average loop time down from about 6:05 over three loops the last time, to 5:40 over 7 loops this time. Each 1.7 km loop involves climbing 30 m (100 ft) of altitude in 600 m, so about a 5% grade.

Commuted by bike 5 miles (20 minutes) at 4am. Been on my feet since, taking orders, serving up food, and refilling coffee cups. Then I walked the 1.5 miles across town to the bank just a few minutes ago to make a deposit, I used to bike there but for some reason the bank tellers get nervous when I walk in wearing bike gloves and a helmet (??).

I took a fun walk today around downtown and the Mississippi River. The annual mayfly hatch happened last night, so pretty much everything near the river was smelly and covered with piles and piles of dead mayflies. It's really an amazing thing, and the sheer number of dead bugs is best appreciated on foot.
I didn't have my camera - if it's not storming, maybe tomorrow. (Here are some pictures from a Minnesota Public Radio story.)

I wonder if Mayflies are edible. Those pictures are amazing. I've (happily) never seen anything like that around here.
I walked downtown to the post office to return some air compressor parts, then over to a feed store to pick up a few items for my back packing trip next week. I've been wearing my hiking boots to make sure I still like them. I do.

This Week ...
Walked:
Monday – 2 km outside
Tuesday – 2 km outside + 7.44 km on treadmill
Wednesday – 1.35 km outside
Thursday – 1.8 km outside + 7.23 km on treadmill
Friday – 2.2 km outside
Total: 24.02 km
Of that, 14.67 km were inside on the treadmill and 9.35 km were outside in the morning or at lunch doing somewhat transportational-type walking. About a 61:39 recreational : transportational split
During the transportational walks, I checked out outdoor furniture possibilities, went to the library, visited a couple bookshops to get recipe books, walked to and from the hospital, and walked my usual 500 metres to work (that's the walk total of my walk > bus > walk commute to work).

Rare Saturday assignment. Probably here from 9 'til noon. Since I'm at my 'old' office site, it's a good opportunity to colour in a bit more of the far side of the map on the way home.

Quality time with grandson--we walked downtown for pie at our favorite little restaurant. The streets were closed to autos for a classic car show, so we walked around looking at the cars.
