Quick release axle threaded all the way

I want to rebuild my m475 hub. When I measured my hub end to end it's 108mm

Some axles I'm seeing are threaded all the way across and is hollow. My question is, how come the end aren't like dethreaded or stepped down like in normal qr axles.

Have you seen enough front axles to define "normal"?

What's wrong with the current axle? Unless damaged there is no logical reason to replace it.

Lol true. So ok my sample size is small so my normal is ill informed. I need a new ankle just for fun. I want to pretend to know the process just in case i actually need to.

But so are you going to address my comment about it being stepped down vs threaded. I'm concerned that they threads would be damaged.

I have an axle but I'm not sure what it would be called

All of the qr axles I'm familiar with are threaded all the way to both ends and are uniform in diameter. They are not "stepped down" or "dethreaded".

There have been some threaded axles which have had their threaded ends turned down, not many but they do exist.

What does interest me is the photos of your axle and the worn down spots of threading. Looks to me that the axle, and not the cones or intended bearing surfaces, have been acting as the bearing. Is this correct? Andy

That's not exactly "normal". That might be a 10mm axle turned down to fit a fork intended for 9mm axles.

When you say m475, do you mean shimano Deore?

Might be cheaper/ easier to get a new front wheel - I've gotten them for around $50.

There's another thread on this subject with smooth ended Deore m475 axles.

I guess my XTs are old style. m756, they're 9mm and threaded all the way across.

Actually, I think I'm done pretending you're actually serious enough to look up anything.

What's going on with all those damaged threads ?

Not saying that this is going on but thread wear, as seen along the axle in spots, like this can be from the bearings failing to maintain the ability to keep the axle coaxial with the hub's IDs. In other words the axle got so loose it spun on the axle/hub contacts and not by the bearings. Andy

Are your hubs disc or non disc? Not sure if it changed along the way, but front disc (Shimano) hubs have had M10 axles for quite some time.

Yep, 6-bolt disc. These hubs might be quite old. Got the wheelset on a super closeout sale for $200 about 2 years ago. My phone refused to focus on the threads, but they're there
