Is this stem adjustable?

What brand is it?
From the pictures you posted, my guess is Sunlite? You might search online for that and see if there's instructions anywhere. I used to have one like that but it's been so long I can't help you off hand.

Yes it is adjustable.
If i understand correctly from the picture. You should just loosen axle bolt and adjust. Does not work like this?

It almost the same except for mine doesn't have the bolt underneath to adjust the angle. I've removed the axle bolt and even given the stem a few whacks and no movement...

Nope. It's a jpg file and keeps throwing me the error message "this PNG image had the wrong file extension" or something like that. SO FRUSTRATING!!! I've posted pics in here many times without issue. Tried a different browser and image too. Anyways it looks exactly like an adjustable quill stem but with no angle adjustment bolt.

I would loosen the allen headed bolt on the right side of the stem and that should allow you to adjust the stem. I haven't had a stem like this one or really any adjustable stem in several years though. You may want to ask on the hybred forum as a lot of those bikes have adjustable stems. or you could sign up for the Box O' Crap. There was a lot of stems in that box when it came to me. LOL

What I did was completely remove the bolt and notched washer (I don't know how to describe it really) then tried to adjust the angle. The nut seems as if it is somehow part of the body of the stem - it did not turn, and cannot be removed.
Am I wrong in thinking the stem looks like it's adjustable? Why is this stem such a mystery!?

There should be a side plate with teeth that needs to be pulled loose after the bolt is out.

Agreed. I've only encountered a couple of adjustable stems, but both were designed so that a slight loosening or under-torquing of the screw would not be dangerous. In both cases, there was some sort of notched or splined part, so that the stem actually adjusts in discrete steps rather than smoothly.

Could it be that you hold one side with a hex key whilst you use another hex key to turn the opposite side and that adjusts the stem angle?
