My nothing special, unexciting, mid-eighties Italian entry-level bike rescue build .
I really need to stay off CL/Marketplace.
This sad Olmo appeared. My size, an hour away, reasonable price. Off to Lewiston I went.
I almost never take before pictures as I'm too eager to pitch into a project, so I'll post the ones from the listing:
Brought it back to the shop. It's worse than it looks:
Unfamiliar with Universal 125 brakes.
Campy rear hub of some sort.
Nice 3ttt cockpit.
Columbus Tretubi, so it's not all bad.
It really is worse than first glance. Paint is sun faded in one side, lots of gouges with rust, graphics pretty well chewed up. First step, take it down to little bitty pieces. However the seat post is stuck, STUCK, STUCK !

Visually a good size.
the missing seatpost binder bolt should have been a tip off?
best fortune to remove it without destruction.
on the plus side, should ride well.

Thickest seatpost I've ever seen. I had to open it up with a series of drill bits to get it wide enough for a Sawsall blade.
I didn't feel too bad about losing it since the top plate of the saddle clamp was cracked.
With that chore out of the way it was off to my powder coat guy. Now I had time to source graphics and take everything down an run through the ultrasonic.
Here's most of the bits disassembled, cleaned, lubed, and reassembled:
The pedals spin OK, but I had a nice pair of MKS Sylvans in the bin. The 13-21 just ain't gonna cut it around here. There's a minty Shimano 600 13-24 waiting.
Back from the powdercoater. Time to face the BB shell and head tube and clean up the threading in the DO adjusters and RD hanger.
Wheels are mismatched. Rear hub is Campy front is Specialized.......
...but the rims match, sort of..
Drive train is Ofmega Mundial and Campy 980.
The front brake levers look more Campy-like than Universal, so I ordered a set of the Soma Fab hoods. Once I swapped out the cable housing bushings they fit all right, but they're awful thin.
And now for the Glamour shots!

Ready to ride!
That saddle has been in the bin for over a decade waiting for the right project.
Campy sticker is a Cyclemondo freebe. I must have a dozen of them.
Cleaned up like a farm girl on Prom night, as they say around here.

The Soma hoods are translucent but so far of durable material.
I have wasted money on reproductions that have deteriorated very quickly.
so much for that.
I am done with those, various sellers, I doubt same producer- equal unhappiness.
there are no prestigious concours that can be attended reasonably from Southern California at present.
that is a thick seatpost. Conservative Engineering safety factor.

11/06/23, 12:21pm - Got the bike home
11/06/23, 12:54pm - Post unstuck, frame powder coated, reassembled and ready to ride
By golly, that is the fastest bike restoration I’ve ever seen

great fun
will look forward to following along
transfers so poor, if my project would leave them off
rear mech appears to be model 990 -
https://velobase.com/ViewComponent.a...=108&AbsPos=28
here be the 980 -
https://velobase.com/ViewComponent.a...=108&AbsPos=27
forward mech be the Nuovo Valentino model
Tullio did not offer a 980 or 990 anterior mech so this was employed -
for any readers who may have missed it top506 performed a bang-up resto on another, even more modest, bowl of pasta here -

Stunning. It probably rides great, despite being Tretubi. Maybe my favorite steel track bike was a 1983 Bianchi Eco Pista, built with Aelle. Not even Aelle-R, mind you.
That's the most psychedelic crankset I've ever seen. Just looking at it does things to my head.

Local metal fabrication shop that does this on the side/under the table. During COVID it was $50 frame and fork, now up to $70.
A few down sides, single color and they won't mask chrome socks and crowns. Also plan on cleaning up BB, head tube, and any threaded bits. For the money I'm OK with that.
