First paragraph had me chuckling, MTB'ers have really been doing that for 30+ years now.
Great article, such technical details and the Petersen/Ritchey interview is compelling in light of how the industry and sport has changed and progressed since the article was written.

Gripshift ads are well timed with discussion of them in another thread.

Thanks for that! Wonder what GP of today would say to the GP of 1990, who was trying to make a really lightweight mtb. Definitely not a factor for his current “hillibike” offerings!

Really neat article. Loved the double feature where the shared tubing is discussed and then each bike is compared/contrasted. And the interview at the end is really neat, though I wish Petersen did more talking vs asking.
Seeing the geometry differences between the bikes was interesting since there are some fundamentally significant differences between the bikes.
My takeaway from that whole article was that the MB0 was a less than impressive design and really missed on a lot things. And also, the candidness of how mistakes were documented and addressed really isnt something you see currently. Maybe QC is higher, maybe mistakes are ignored or not noticed, but either way mistakes arent discussed like they were in this article.
- The bottom bracket height was 3/4 of an inch off from what Bridgestone spec'd. And this is an expensive production bike- build #75 of 823. Thats a significant error- a BB being 19mm higher or lower than it should be is not minor.
- The seatpost collar was mounted at an angle. Again, production frame that is expensive.
- Head tube angle that is .5 degree off what it is supposed to be. Again, production frame that is expensive.
- Ride handling that is described as 'occasionally too much to handle', 'steers out from under us on some technical climbs', and 'can be fun to deal with'.
And the Ritchey was a full 2 degrees off for HTA?! Thats insane, but at least that bike was a pre-production model and changes for production were already planned.

The article mentions "standard" 22.2 threaded steerers & headsets as an advantage. That sure changed in less than a decade...
