Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

After todays ride I don’t think I am racing either.

Set out to do 6x4 zone 5. Supposed to do 6 sets but would have settled for 3. First one I was able to stay in the power range but not hitting the numbers I should be hitting. Second rep couldn’t even get into the range. Called it quits after a min. Then I tried to some easy tempo intervals. Nope. At this point, I just wanted to ride for myself so zone 1 and zone 2 until the buzzer ran out.

I felt so amazing at and after monster cross and now I feel like I am back at square one.

That's a tough one. Shouldn't you be doing easier rides pre race? Conserving and storing energy pre race? Maybe take it easy for a while and see how you feel.

theoretically yes. But still recovering from a cold, and I wanted to see how I would perform. If I can’t perform I should t race.

Yup, but I have been sick since monster cross, so I wanted to see if I could even hold power. The 40/20s went well yesteday, but I was spent after.

Today was not good.

I would imagine the insurance company will total it. Seems like that’s the norm now, easier for them to total the vehical then to fix it. Just my 2 cents.

crit. 40 mins.

Last year average speed was 27.1 and 31 in the break. It didn’t feel that fast last year, but I never stood a chance. 5 guys at the start broke away, I wasn’t even aware, and then we were lapped.

Now you're not even going to race? Tell the family to stay at home. Get out there and get your ass handed to you and maybe you might learn something from it. You have to learn to deal with the bad as well as the good. Avoiding the possible bad outcome by ditching the start is the coward's way out. There's some other words to describe it, but they won't get past the censor.

Im all for the experience but what’s the point if I can’t even hang on. I mean seriously I couldn’t hold 250 watts for 4 mins today. How the hell am I supposed to race like that? Seems like a waist of money honestly. I’ll make a decision tomorrow, but if I feel like today, I don’t see the point.

Morning vibes before my Zwift ride. maybe I should listen to something more upbeat/energizing? IDK, I'm appreciating the chill.

Was gonna do some intervals on my favorite segments, but there is a seemingly popular event in a half hour on a new course, "Loop de Loop". It goes up Zwift KOM twice. That's gonna be over 6.0 for ~1:45 to stay attached.... Hmm

If it's like most crit courses, you should be able to hang in the pack on much less then that. I've finished P/1/2 crits on 200 watts. I'm a bit smaller than you, but still.

Unless you are overtly feeling ill, I say just go for it. If you're not confident in your legs, just tell your buddies you're gonna sit in and be low key for the day. Practice getting your AP and HR as low as possible.

Truth. Recovery from illness is paramount

As for training, rest and recovery days is where the magic happens.

Maybe you should have thought about that earlier in the week when you decided to ride MTB in Richmond(and crashed/suffered an injury) How important is/was that crit race to you? If it's not important, don't sign up for it. Or do it but don't care about the results. If it is, then make it a priority in your training/preparation/life. Don't undermine an event like that with poor decisions like MTBing the week of or what you did this morning leading up to it. Simple as that.

BTW, I have a half coming up on March 9th and another one coming up the following weekend. I went into taper after my long run on Sunday. Even if you had messaged me about the possible MTB riding earlier in the week, I would have had to decline. It would have undercut/ not been productive for those events. About the only thing I'm doing this week is trying not to gain weight.

Fair enough, but what does the MTB crash have to do with anything? That was a commitment that I had with my best friend, had nothing to do with the race. I already had to cancel the week prior because of work, I couldn’t cancel again. My lack of power has nothing to do with the mtb crash.

Poor decisions? Im trying to figure out what my body is even capable of doing. I got a cold or something while at work after monster cross and it hasn’t gone away. The day prior I felt okay, but afterwards was spent, so I wanted to see what I could do today, and it wasn’t anything. Not riding tomorrow, hopefully I will feel better.

I vote the nbd route. Just race it and have it be nbd. For most criteriums I enter - this is my attitude and I don't break my stride the week of for it. On most years, there might be (up to) 3 or 4 races that I take more seriously in my preparation. Otherwise just do what the hell you want and pin the number on its nbd

Also earlier I recall you deciding between Master's and open (I forget your cat). If you're feeling well, the answer is do both. You have the endurance to double up.

I did both last year, this year will depend if my wife is willing to watch our child plus my friends. my wife can get a little over whelmed, and she’s has not been around this kid before.
