Show me your Suntour Superbe/Superbe Pro
I've got the itch to look for a nice Japanese frame and some Suntour Superbe or Superbe Pro to dress it with. Show me yours, I'm looking for inspiration.

Sorry, not Japanese, and a fuzzy picture, too. But a "Superbe" riding and shifting bike, but now someone else's.

Totally non-period correct Superbe Pro on my Trek 400 Elance.
I get such a kick out of the top level of machinery on a second from bottom of the line bike- as this pic demonstrates:

Still learning
My Superb group is resting in a plastic shoe box. It is a full kit from a too small mid 1980's Schwinn Peloton.

@OldsCOOL Your bike is inspiring me to pull mine out and start working on it! Now that I have a fork "straightened", it can be assembled. My plan was to do Campy NR, but I believe Suntour Superbe was the build in 1984. I can go one step up with a number of Pro parts.

My Katakura Silk is mainly dressed out with late 1980s Superbe Pro parts: seat post, derailleurs, shift levers, wheel hubs. Brakes did not have enough reach, so I used Campy brakes. Crankset is Super Maxy that I really like.

Or how about a before picture? I figured we need at least one crusty bike on this discussion.
This is a Kabuki DFD that is mostly Suntour Superbe. Picked it up from a local DKO yesterday. Naturally it has a stuck seat post. Priced accordingly. Stem, bars, crank, RD, shift levers all OK. Brake calipers may be save-able. Good rear wheel.

That's a pretty healthy-sized freewheel. How big of a max cog with that RD shift?

Maybe down the line...it took me a while to piece it together. I shouldn't have bothered. Frankly it's not as good as the shimano stuff from the same period. It's better than c-record, but that's hardly a ringing endorsement (and I don't even think it's that much better, and it's far uglier). In terms of aesthetics, it's like most Suntour - blocky.

It totally didn't work. The cog teeth were pretty much riding on the pulley teeth. Neat sounds ensued.
I think my smallest big cog is 28- and I haven't been able to get the Superbe to work on a 28- even though many, many sources say it's possible. I actually had trouble with this freewheel and an XC Pro rear derailleur- I know cage length has nothing to do with max cog acceptance... however, this medium cage RD was giving me chattering, like the FW was just a *touch* too big. I re-replaced it with the long cage XC Comp that was originally (not "originally originally") on there- and now it works much nicer.
I'm going to be playing some freewheel games soon.
I've used an XC Comp long cage on a 34T Suntour with no problems. Maybe it was 32... but I'm pretty sure it was 34.
