I heard it said that you have more interesting experiences when you opt for riding over driving a car. Such was the case today. While riding home from downtown, a pickup truck passed me with a dog hanging by his collar outside the passenger side of the cab. Apparently, the dog had been enjoying the view but attempted to jump out and join me on my ride.

The dog was a cute fellow. A boxer, I think. He was silently hanging there without a struggle as the pickup slowed to a stop. I was startled but parked my bike on the curb and rushed over to help the dog. Well, I moved too fast and my lower back suddenly locked up when I approached the dog. I looked like quasimodo as I hobbled over the to cab and handed the owner his dog. The owner, by the way, was quite abashed by the incident and said he wouldn't let his dog stick his head out the window anymore.

I got back on my back and realized that I must have tried to react too quickly from a stretched out position. I'm at home now wondering what in the heck just happened.

Dogs in the back of pick up trucks can be a real treat.

I'll never forget the first time I was being slowly passed by a pick up and suddenly there's a great big dog barking right in my ear.

One time I was riding in the back of a pickup with a bunch of people, heading toward a gold mine near Havilah, California. I had my dog, a sheltie, on a leash. Well, she wasn't liking the ride too much, she was still pretty car shy.

Suddenly, she leapt over the top of the bed wall and out of the truck.

She had just enough time to realize that it was a sheer cliff on that side of the truck before her collar caught her, and I was able to haul her back in. No harm done, but she had a better appreciation of the safety of the truck.

We did a lot of other driving on that trip, and by the time we got home, she was an enthusiastic motorist.

Quite recently I was driving my vehicle and as I came to the crest of a hill I met a pickup truck in my lane. I hit the brakes and laid on the horn. The other driver saw me and swerved hard to miss. His maneuver caused the black lab in the back of his truck to fly out into my path. The dog hit the grille of my truck.
Dog lived. Insurance payed for damages to the front of my vehicle. I'm VERY glad I decided to take my truck instead of my bike on that errand.

As I was riding a lady pulled up beside me in an suv. I looked up and she ask me for directions. Looking back at the road the suv moved ahead of me so the rear door was at my face. I looked up started to talk and I was talking to a dog in the back seat. She slowed a bit and I told her to turn around. The next time someone asks me for directions While i'm riding I'll tell them "TO BUY A MAP" I was on the white line with no berm and she only gave me a few inches of road.
