Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

My head is ready to explode. I'm finially ready to purchase a new bicycle and have no idea what i want.

Well, i somewhat have an idea. Still trying to figure out if i want to build, or buy complete. There is a 'somewhat' local velodrome that id like to give a go at but the bike will see street use. Not commuter use, but will for sure see some street use.

Im afraid the bikes im looking at are too 'track' for the street use they could see(like Fuji Comp, Felt Tk3, Trek T1, Motobecane Team Track) so i was thinking about building up an IRO Mark V Pro frameset instead (maybe a Scrambler V3). Budget is roughly $800 plus a little if i have to, minus a little to keep the bank filled haha.

A little off topic in a photo thread im sorry...but my mind is all sorts of confused on what i want so im posting to fulfill my ranting needs

.Chris

To keep it slightly on topic, here is my roomates unsafe fixed gear. He built it from one of those walmart geard "Denali" bikes.

ImChris - Unless you find a superb deal on an aluminum track bike of your preference, I'd say go with the IRO. You just can't possible go wrong with an IRO Mark V, especially in the Pro edition without braze-ons nor mounts. The IRO also has virtually no toe overlap (from what I experience) as opposed to more 'track oriented' bikes with epic toe overlap. I ride the Mark V Pro myself and I highly recommend it.

I buy a 36" inseam in my jeans. The Raleigh is a 59, and the Mercier is a 61. You're right, the seat post is a mile high on the Raleigh. On both bikes I have a slight break in my knee at the bottom of the pedal stroke, and no rocking in the saddle.

Thanks for the input man!

I have it narrowed down to the IRO Mark V Pro or a Trek T1. Like i said, there is a Velodrome about 45 minutes away from my house and i'm really interested in going to the beginner nights to check it out. Its cheap to ride at too!

Don't most tracks have rental bikes?

You could try that to see if track riding is something that even remotely interests you at all. Because there's a good chance it won't, so making that a big consideration in buying a new frame might be unnecessary.

Seems like you're trying to decide which brand name golf clubs you like before you even play a round.

That is a very good point indeed and yes, the somewhat local track does have rental bikes. I like the golf example, i never really thought about it like that..haha

As goofy as this is going to sound, i just really love the look of the T1 more so than the Mark V Pro too. That is me being 100% honest. But i have seen some really awesome IRO builds too. Decisions decisions...

Hey definitely get the bike you like the most. I would just advise against getting something that is really made for the track (and might not be practical for the street) when you don't even know whether you like track racing.

That said, plenty of people ride T1s on the street. You probably will not die.
