Looking closer at the pictures, it appears to be a Giant Defy which is a sub $1,000 bike to begin with. Could they not at least use a Caad10/12 to plate?

But the real question is it more laterally stiff and vertically compliant than the previous generation, while shaving off 100 grams and boasting a stiffer bottom bracket?

You know, that seems kind of steep. Gold plating prices out at around $3/sq inch, right? I don't know the surface area of a bike frame and fork, but it's surely far less than 100,000 square inches.
Although, like they say I guess, if it increases your enjoyment of cycling, it makes you happy to ride or you feel pleasure in ownership, and you can afford it without making the kids suffer ... who are we to say it's overpriced?

Metal working .. Gold plating is almost as easy to do on Steel as Copper .. the cost is a bit more of course..
It is Very corrosion resistant... Gold Doubloons dug up 500 years later from the sea bottom are still shiny..

The idea isn't new. Ernesto Colnago donated a gold bike to St. Pope John Paul II in 1979.
The Pope was pretty athletic, loved to ride, kayak and ski. He never rode the gold bike but gave it back a year later and requested a flat bar bike instead. Its now in Colnago's museum.

The gold plated Colnago DEFINITELY trumps the gold plated aluminum frame bike in my book.

Never having been ridden helps it get to infallible status, but I'd rather see a Brooks saddle on it for that ;o)

The should donate this bike to me John Paul is a Saint now he does not need a bike. This would allow the deacon to get some good use out of it as we deacons allows are require for a bishop to give protection above the usual liturgical functions. So do you need my address.
1 John 2:16 Deacon. For the rest of you...
