Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

Cyclocross Racing Catagories

I have signed up for 2 local CX races, 1 in West Milford NJ, and 1 in Lipmann Park in Warwarsing NY. I placed myself in theCat 5 category , having never raced before. But there's a Master 50+ category, I'm 53. Is that the one I should be in? Thanks.

You might find the Cat 5 to be more crowded, more chaotic, and more dangerous than the Master class. The Master class participants are probably faster, on average, than the Cat 5.

You're fine in either. Many races run both together at the same time or sometimes stagger the start by 30 sec.

IMO, only do the masters if you are in really good shape otherwise you will get blown away. Masters is not "guys over x age". It is "former racers over x age."

I think the participants of the Masters tends to equal 'we are the masters of kicking your tail.'

Also, many Masters races are 1234 only. No Cat5 racers welcome.

I got thoroughly beat down in the last cross race of the year last December when I raced in the masters class. Since I was all by myself I took advantage of every beer handup opportunity and enjoyed a fair share of good natured heckling from my team mates.

This season I have been racing cat 4/5 and really enjoy racing with others at my skill and fitness level. Being off the back out by yourself gets old fast.

When cyclocross first came to Florida, I picked up some podium spots because all the smart guys raced as beginners (It was the first season of cross within 500 miles AFAICT) and I was dumb enough to enter the 45+ category. Left me alone with all the guys who were also new to bike racing AND old. All the MTB and Road Racing veterans were fighting it out in the beginner's class.

You did the right thing. If you've never raced, you should be in CAT 5. It will be a ****show, because no one else has ever raced either (and its CX). But most of the guys racing masters will be like CAT 2 or 3, and also over 50
