Regina freewheel, strange issue

I have removed my freewheel for service only to find a strange wear pattern. any ideas ? thank you for the input.

yes it didn't look good.how that happened is the question.maybe just worn out

Not dead, they just don't make bicycle freewheels anymore.

Did it function ok before you started to mess with it? If so, and if the cogs are good, just lube it up, reassemble, and go.

FYI, you didn't remove the freewheel, you disassembled the freewheel and (presumably) left the base threaded on the hub

My guess it was stored for years and it corroded the bearings where they sat. But I agree with Moe- if it still spins OK, I would not worry about it as the bearings on a freewheel are only there for coasting and carry virtually no load. When peddling the ratchet takes all the force.

Reckon it's something to do with when the freewheel was made, each indentation matches a ratchet notch. Something to do with the forging process leaving a softer area maybe? Or just an artifact left after machining post forging?
