I’m having this dilemma as well.
currently own a steel framed Jamis Renegade Exploit 1x11 with 42mm front and 44mm rear rubber and absolutely love it for touring on roads and light gravel. But took it on a gravel ride last week where fatter 2.2-2.6 inch 29’rs would have been much better. I was certainly undergunned and it was dry conditions, would have been a non starter if wet and muddy.
I have a fat bike with 29er 2.2 inch rubber but that fat, stiff aluminum frame is a complete dog!
so I’m trying to find the sweet spot middle ground with a 29 hard tail. Surly Krampus, ECR maybe. Kona Unit X maybe. Looking for other ideas.

I was torn between a mountain bike (in general) and a gravel bike... I bought both LOL. But think I will try to sell my mountain bike now...
