Riding with a phablet
I had to get a new phone. In a fit of damn-the-torpedos, I got one of those newer big honking half phone/half tablet thingies: a phablet.
It's awkward to ride with. Sticks up out of a jersey pocket. Anybody find a good solution? In a perfect world, I'd love a weatherproof holder that put it where I could see it.

I bought a holder for my phone and put it in a Lifeproof case. I doubt it's really weatherproof, but it may buy me enough time to find shelter in inclement weather.

Wait, is it "phablet," as in phat x tablet, or "fablet," from fabulous x tablet? I thought the latter; at least I've never seen one which would fit my definition of phat.

I have an iPhone 6+. Big honkin' phone. I put it in a ziploc bag as well and stuff it in my jersey pocket. It's perfect - waterproof, light, and dirt cheap. You can even use your phone without having to take it out of the bag. You will not win style points, however, pulling it out at the coffee shop afterwards.

A crash on a $2,000 bike might do $300 or $400 damage. A crash with a $600 phone can easily do $600 damage. Just to make sure it's damaged people here talk about a holder?

The top tube bag I have now, which also has all my bike kit in it, has a pocket with a clear plastic screen on top. It was convenient. I don't get a lot of calls and texts, thankfully, and it was nice to be able to glance down and at least see who was trying to contact me. But, this phone is so much bigger that I think a top bag of similar design, but just dino-sized to fit my ridiculous phone, would be too big...? Maybe not.

StanSeven, that's a legit concern fo sho. I do think my top tube bag would protect a phone pretty well in a crash by dint of its location if nothing else.

Do you have to carry that phone with you when you ride? I get that some people have to be in contact with work or whatever at all times or use it to track rides on Strava. But if it's just used for emergencies and doesn't have to be checked frequently, I might suggest a burner phone with a minimal amount of minutes on it that you could just toss in your jersey pocket and forget until you need it. And if it gets broken/dropped/lost it's no big deal. Leave the phablet (not heard that one before- great nickname) at home.

I don't have the tablet sized phone. But my phone is always with me. I run an app that logs my cycling miles and stats. But it does so in a Ziploc bag in my jersey pocket. I resist putting a phone/tablet on the handlebars. It doesn't even look safe!

I haven't seen a phone mount that didn't look really awkward, and the bigger the phone the bigger the awkward.

They aren't just phones anymore. They're much more than a phone. And in an emergency.... like a break-in or fire at home or work. It might be the Internet camera connection you need to confirm a problem... that will send the police or fire. It's great to be a cyclists but disconnecting from the world isn't doable for everyone. My phone has a tracker as well. So if I end-up hurt in a ditch at least my wife can find me.

But I will ask: if a person is so afraid to leave home that everything about their life has to be monitored, then where is the benefit to going for a ride at all? There is nothing that I could do from thirty or forty miles away that a burglar or fire alarm or neighbor or coworker could not do. A phone call or text could get me to ride faster or get picked up in a car. And I leave an itinerary at home so people know where to look if I'm not home within a certain time frame. But I admit, I have chosen to not live with a lot of technology in my personal life. I understand that is not everyone's preference.

Maybe something like https://www.sfbags.com/collections/c...ing-ride-pouch
It would be great for carrying other accessories as well
