1984 Schwinn Tempo
So, this is the story.
Growing up, it was always my grandpa that bought us our bikes and stuff.
Started with Honda Kick N Go (very cool for the time)
Then my first bike, Blue Schwinn Stingray with banana seat.
Then an all chrome Diamondback BMX that I rode everywhere.
And then my first “Big” bike....a 1984 Schwinn Tempo...in Black with Yellow/White stickers.
I was 10 then and he died that year. The bike was stolen a couple years later.
Being a kid, I just moved onto the next thing.
Fast forward to last January. I am out on a ride by myself, having a “discussion” with Grandpa (I often talk to him when I am out on rides...not sure why, I just do). And I think of that bike...then I start a search, to try and find one in that color scheme but my size currently. Nothing.
Then about 2 weeks ago I bump the thread and Gartenmeister links a CL ad of a listing in Boise. I contacted the seller, got some pictures and made a deal.
He shipped it out on Monday and it arrived TODAY!!! It is in decent condition for a 34 year old bike. Nothing a little cleaning won’t fix.
I am looking forward to cleaning it, modernizing it (yes I am) and riding the tar out of it. I will post pictures for anyone interested as I go.

I wish my '84 Tempo had been a size larger. I'd still own it and be riding it a lot. Was a great bike.
Looking forward to pics!

I find using flickr for posting photos the easiest way, not exactly simple but pretty easy once you do it a few times. A member was kind enough to direct me there when I first started.
Select your photo in the Flickr app
click on the sharing icon
choose BBCode from the list of options and copy the link that comes up
In BF select the photo icon in your post and then paste the link from Flickr, click ok and bada bing! you're done.

This is the only code I can find.
I tried to post it as an image, but all I got was a small box.

Received some parts today and made a little progress on my “Black Lightning Tempo”.
New cranks, brakes, and wheels. Rebuilt the headset (black spacer) on it way are FD and RD. Need seatpost and stem adapter... then I’ll mount stem bars and brifters (already have).
SRAM Apex crankset
Tektro medium reach R737 brakes.

I like the progress. It looks like your '84 is being built up similarly to my '85. Here's the link to it. https://www.bikeforums.net/19604713-post660.html
Keep the pictures rolling in.

I am FORCING myself to slow down and enjoy the build...I don’t do well at slow. For example, my wife and I once bought a ‘67 bug with the plan of rebuilding it SLOW. Well, a month later it was completely new. Wheels. Paint. Upholstery. Engine rebuilt. Chrome. Running boards, etc etc. I couldn’t stop working on it until it was done.
To keep myself from doing that, I am gathering parts slow....it is frustrating but working.
I will update with pics as changes happen.

Help...
I need some help...I am trying to mount downtube cable adapters on the bosses so that I can run Brifters...however the bosses that are on it are ROUND with a tab on them as opposed to the square ones. I have a set of Shimano cable adjusters but they won’t work. Any ideas?

Those are Shimano type B proprietary bosses used during the mid 1980's. Nobody is happy when they discover those damn things. Cable stops for these do not exist, you'll have to modify some to make them fit.
First thing, ream out the inside of the cable stop to about .5" so it will fit over the boss. Then file or grind to fit the notch, I found a nice example in another thread. Do you have the oddball 4.5m shifter screws, they can be a challenge to find.

That's like a Shimano only mounting scheme boss, that they used for about two weeks and then abandoned (kidding, but not by much). I had a bicycle shop that was kind enough to grind a notch into the cable adjuster so it would fit with the boss.

Ok. So if I have to modify...could I make the campagnolo resin ones work? I really want black.

... or, you could grind on the metal ones and spray paint them black. Sorry, I'm out on the resin ones... I don't know anything about them.

That's gonna be a wicked Tempo when you're done.

Stem adapter showed up yesterday so I got the stem (painted to match) and the bars mounted.
Ended up in a fender bender today...no biggie, just any money I had to spend on bikes is now going to my deductible.
So the seatpost and headset will stay chrome for a little while.

Wow, looks sharp in black. I only ever seem to see the teal/white ones. They've always struck me as a really nice bike for the money.

Great story, and the build looks great. I love the color coordinated stem. I'm like you -- once I get into something, I can't stop. I once had a "winter" project. It was done before Halloween.
