I had the day off so I figured I would bang out my metric century for this month. Gorgeous day, sunny, high 75. I rode 67 miles on some new for me roads, all in RI. Scituate-Smithfield-Glocester-Burriville-Glocester-Foster-Scituate

JJS, nice pics! It almost makes me glad I work in Rhode Island. All seriousness aside however, RI is a lovely place.

The word for today's commute ride on the UO8 is "dappled". The Blackstone Bikeway was dappled with both fallen leaves and sunlight slanting through the still-green unfallen leaves. If I hadn't been going 15mph I would have stopped and taken a picture. However I did take these:

Of course there is always a cosmic payback. As I was riding the train this morning I noticed a bulge in my rear tire. Closer inspection showed that the sidewall threads in one direction had been cut for about 3/4th of an inch, but the threads in the other direction were intact. Fortunately it did not blow out on the ride in or the ride out. I wonder how long it's been that way? I guess I'll be heading off to the bike shop this weekend.

Jim did you ride the bike path in RI between Lincoln and Woonsocket?

My commute runs south of there. In the morning I pick up the bikeway at Ann&Hope Rd in Cumberland and ride north as far as the Martin St bridge. Not far north of the Ann&Hope entrance the bikeway crosses over to the west bank of the river, and center of the bridge is marked as the Cumberland/Lincoln boundary.

For recreation/exercise I have ridden most of the way to Woonsocket, and once or twice from somewhere in that region all the way to the southern end, I think.

At Martin St there is a ramp from the bikeway up to the road. I take Martin 100 yards or so, turn left on a small road called Lower River Rd, the right to climb the hill on Old River Rd (rt 126) up to rt116. At the other end, Ann&Hope connects via a few blocks with rt123 which I run most of the way into Attleboro. Actually, on the way home I turn right off of 123 at Tiffany, turn left on Commerce Way, then left on County. This lets me avoid the intersection where I took that pic of the Boston/Foxboro sign. That's a nice run westward but a bumpy, uphill, busy, clogged road on the eastbound side.

I used to commute from Providence to Woonsocket on non-rainy days for several years. It was a nice ride, 17.5 miles each way. I would take Douglas ave to Louisquisset to breakneck Hill (123) to Front to the bike path into Manville. Then turn off on to Manville rd to Hamlet in the Woon. The Martin St bridge was under construction for a few years so I started riding Old River Rd to Manville. It was a pretty hilly commute. The bike path is really nice, It runs parallel to the old canal.

Chris I bet you don't miss New England in Jan. & Feb!

As I plan my travel next year, I think I'm going to have to explore some of these places. The more I see of the area, the more intrigued I am by the possibilities of spending some time in RI. Do you think the roads you travel on would be suitable for riding with a tandem? In other words, what are the hills like?

I woke up at 6 AM today so I could get on the road early just as the sun was rising in hopes of getting in a ride before the rain arrived. The temperature was about 55° as I rolled out the door, which was fine with me as I knew I, and the outside temperature, would warm up as I started pedaling. What made this ride all the more enjoyable this morning was the color of the sky over the fields as the sun was rising. Today's ride only highlights for me exactly why an early start to the day works so well. Total mileage for today's ride was just a snick under 31 miles with 1850 feet of climbing. As I look at how much climbing I'm doing on my rides lately, it becomes apparent that I have come to terms with hills...

A ride in the mountains on Saturday. A 90 mile ride from Rimrock Lake to Natches via White, Cayuse and Chinook Passes. A friend of mine organizes this ride every year in October to celebrate the end of the Summer cycling season. A sag wagon follows us along the route providing an endless supply of good food and water. It's needed around here because the route passes through remote areas. Now for the pictures:

It's not peak season for the trees yet, but my lady and I were able to get a nice 35 mile ride in through northern Dutchess County yesterday! The temperature was perfect, and even though the sun didn't come out, the colors were nice.

Metric century today. Given all the bridges and roads that are out in my area, it was a pretty zig zag route through the usual haunts.

I decided to give my trek 630 a spin today. I had installed my new center chainring improperly, so the gap between the two largest rings was too large. Especially troublesome since I use it half step 50/47 on the flats. Now that I mounted it properly, the front end works so well (despite the little chainring having just taken its last ride), that the friction rear may need some updating also.
