I coat both wheels in an amber-like resin compound, tires and all. Sure, it makes the bike unrideable, but everything looks really neat and clean.

Aren't they there to prevent the metal stem from poking the tube when folded? That's the only real practical purpose I see.

Looking at a lot of bike photos recently and I noticed that a lot of them don't have valve caps on. Is it because they fell off or got lost or purposely being left off? I leave mine on thinking that they would help keep the air in my tires in case the needle is loose or something.
Just wondering if its cool factor to leave it off???

Hard to believe it's been 2 years since this thread on valve caps went 15 pages...the things we find to talk about in February 
I needed a couple more schrader caps for a '73 Raleigh Grand Prix. With a penchant for metal truck caps, I went scanning the gravel driveway at the back of tire place where I had new tires put on my car (where they do their truck business). I found just what I needed, but still on the stem. It took Liquid Wrench & pliers to get them off. I spray painted them red to better match the burgundy frame.

They don't keep air in and screwed shut presta valves are adequately protected from contamination.

Nice to see this very important topic resurrected, hopefully this thread will go for another 15 pages so we can finally settle this argument if it's right or wrong to use valve stem caps...I personally use valve stem caps on both Presta and Schrader valves.

One of my bikes has Presta valves. I protect them with Schrader conversions.
