I never look at those ads out of pure disgust, but now the mechanics interest me. How do they keep the pedals with a motor?

^^^^^ In a nutshell, there's a separate chain from the engine to a sprocket on the left side of the hub. The end result is usually some sort of dog's breakfast, as illustrated above.

yeah, if you look closely, you can see there'sa LARGE silver sprocket on the ND side of the rear wheel, where a disc brake rotor might be... afaik, there is a 'freewheel' is in the motor's reduction gearbox

that exhaust looks like a 2-stroke expansion chamber, odds are that thing is LOUD and obnoxiously high pitched, as those little 2-smokers often run up to insanely high RPMs.

Thanks, I thought they put a sprocket in the left, but I don't think in terms of disc wheels so the attachment was out of my imagination. An abomination by any other name...

ok, I was curious. here's a typical kit for the driven sprocket.
https://www.gasbike.net/collections/...apter-assembly

took me a minute to figure it out, you put that machined clamp assembly around the hub in between the spoke flanges, so the three studs stick out between the spokes, and clamp it to the hub, the sprocket goes on those three studs.

Which means all that drive power depends on a press fit against the hub flange, and the three legs that fit between spokes. What could possibly go wrong?

no, it appears to actually clamp around the center section of the hub via the two bolts visible in the picture.

But that part can't possibly clamp tightly enough around the hub (since every hub body has a different diameter) to keep from rotating. What keeps the mechanism from rotating relative to the hub body is the three legs passing through the spokes, and the squeeze fit between the part with the legs and the sprocket.

I’m confused and oddly enthused...might be the fenders or that seat...definitely well sprung for comfort...nice angle to the handlebars...I would keep the frame just the way it is for as long as it holds up...the chain guard is it’s crowning glory...flowing red...accentuates it’s beauty...gotta go ride my bike now...

Pick two ragged-out Raleighs at random,
Don't bother to clean up or sand 'em.
Just a hinky weld here,
And a dropout squeeze there.
And voila, you've got yourself a tandem!

Said NO ONE EVER!

There are a couple gems in there, one with a full chain case. 100 quid worth? That's another question.

fify. "I have built perhaps a dozen of these over the years". He probably took the time to repaint though.

Somehow I don't think Sheldon would smile in approval at the randomly-timed cranks, the cheap original caliper brakes, the mismatched wheel sizes, or the use of completely rusted chainstays as the surrogate boom tube. At least the rusted chainstays match the rusted fork. And I'd bet a nickel and an old Watney's coaster that the timing side is just a pair of regular single-chainring drive-side crank arms slapped on backward.

Overall design resembles Sheldon's. The execution, well.......

Don't think of them as randomly-timed, think of them as almost perfectly out of phase. Such a setup is not unheard of in tandeming; it's said to smooth out the power strokes of the two riders.
