Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I have Presta to Schraeder adapters in every saddle bag, pannier, trunk bag, or baggie of stuff that I use when I go out riding. I've never needed one.

My response was along the same lines: pump, saddle bag and everything in it. Oh, now and then I'll need it, but the vast majority of the time it's totally useless. Helmet keeps my hair (what's left of it) in place all the time.

I normally keep my keys on a park spoke key, so it's never forgotten on a ride.

It's been the most useful tool, though, so off topic.

I'll raise your Mylar blanket with my tactical tourniquet.

Yes, really.

I eventually realized how silly it was and took it out of my pack.

Maybe I'll reconsider if I buy disc brakes.

Spare tire. When I resumed riding in 2015 I underestimated how tough recent tires are, from hybrid to road bike tires. I was still thinking of tires from the 1970s.

Second most useless, probably the handlebar phone mount. Usually the phone goes in my jersey pocket. I don't even use a basic bike computer. I don't really need to see data in real time. I can fret over it at my leisure later.

I still tend to overpack but am more selective now to suit the ride. I got a smaller seat bag for the road bike to discourage my overpacking habit. Now I can overpack my jersey pockets like a real roadie.

By the same token, a saddle bag is essential for carrying useless things.

I'll call, my hole card is 18650 batteries and I don't carry the flashlight. But I think you've topped me.

Tire levers. But I'll sometimes bring one along in case someone else in the group needs it.

I carried one of those for 2 or 3 years before accepting the fact that I would never need it. I mean, what are the chances that A) my frame pump dies, and B) I'm alone and there are no other cyclists anywhere near me, yet C) there's a gas station with an air compressor right nearby? That confluence would just never happen on any ride I can imagine doing.

I guess right now the most useless item I bring is the SRAM 10-speed PowerLink which has been stuffed into my saddlebag for the past half-decade or so...because my bikes are now 11-speed.

Clif bar.

A few years ago, I had one stuffed in my saddle bag, just in case. Which was dumb, because the only time I tried to eat such things on a long ride I got horrible stomach pain and barely made it back to use the bathroom.

By the end of the summer, it had melted and turned into a giant disgusting mess.

My cleat covers are never used. I should dump those out of the bag.

2nd water bottle cage is essential here in the summer as well for rides over 45 minutes.
