What's Healthier, Cycling or Moderate Alcohol Use?

As far as beer being better than water (quote, above)... I would have to say maybe if you've had the daily minimum requirement of water in that, you can live without beer but you can't live without water and drinking nothing but beer wouldn't help - you'd die of thirst.

Nah, one can hydrate quite adequately with beer. If you’re thinking of the diuretic effect of ethanol, it’s weak and shuts off under even slight dehydration.

Personally, I am intrigued to now learn that when it comes to longevity, studies indicate that, 'abstaining was a risk factor.'
https://www.alcoholproblemsandsoluti...s-live-longer/
The conclusion was: 'In short, moderate drinkers live longer.'

That article gave almost zero concrete, useful information.
There is a vast difference between causation and correlation.

I think if anything, it all shows that while total abstinence is the thing to do by anyone who knows that's what's best for themselves, preaching abstinence to others makes as much sense as preaching abstinence from cycling.
No one commented on the above about, "Too much exercise can kill you - especially if you're a white man: Study finds 7.5 hours a week of fitness DOUBLES your risk of heart disease." However, I can't imagine anyone on this group would recommend abstinence from cycling for all because any amount is bad.

I’m part of the population that cannot drink moderately. I can start off with one or two beers a few times a week, but will gradually ramp it up to a lot more that. Regardless of what any study says, I will never touch alcohol again, I won’t even eat foods cooked with alcohol. To me and others like me, the downside of drinking far outweighs any positive effects.
The good thing is I’ve been to many post ride and other events where beer and stronger drinks are available. I’ve politely refused a serving and no one has ever asked why or tried to encourage me to partake.

An hour and fifteen minutes of hill repeats this morning.
And one or two glasses of red wine and a small dish of potato gratin tonight for dinner.
I plan to live forever.

I'm sorry, likely to get flak for this, but even as a fan of a good bourbon or a dark beer, the premise of this thread is not even worth this discussion.

It might not be all that hard to live like a colonial. Given the discussion above about the practice to drinking low-alcohol cider all day long because of the perceived lack of clean water at the time of the birth of the nation, there's a tasty way to try that as a home experiment--e.g., an ounce of 13.5% red wine to 6 to 7 ounces of branch water and/or sparkling cider results in a >1.5% to <2% drink. Sort of like a, Sangria (and, you could always add a some blueberries and slices of strawberries.
I tried it and, it tasted pretty good. Using the above recipe, assuming a moderate consumption for a man is no more than 2 - 5 oz glasses of 12% wine, that 10 oz could be extended to 6 pints of 1.5% of this new 'colonial' beverage. I see how that would certainly guarantee nothing more than a 'moderate' dose of alcohol.

Just about every film, tv show, and probably a majority of advertisements promote alcohol consumption. That fact alone tells you it's unhealthy.

Several posts on weed use were deleted. Because it’s not legal, particularly at the federal level, it’s a taboo subject here.
