Nothing really. I just put a rack and fenders on it. I am currently trying to drop the lowest gear ratio a bit by going to a MTB cassette. I bought the bike "used" (ridden 50 miles), for an awesome price so I took what I got, and I only got a double chain ring up front. With loaded panniers on against the hills we have around here, it's pretty hard pedaling.

righto, I have an older Tricross with a triple that I changed the granny to a smaller one to get lower gearing, thats why I asked. I have a nephew with one like yours and as you say, changing to a larger rear cassette is the easiest option, other than changing the double chain ring to a smaller set than the 50/34 that is on it now (and can have compatability issues as well doing that, not to mention the cost of a new crankset)

Here's a picture of my loaded up Salsa Vaya 2 the day before embarking on a trip from Oslo to Copenhagen. Decided to go with front and rear panniers for this relatively short trip (350 miles) to maintain a good balance. I also needed to carry a bit more gear than I normally would because it's still very early spring here (we had a snow storm yesterday!) I managed to fit my tent and sleeping bag inside of my Vaude Karakorum panniers, which has really streamlined the whole set up.

I sold a bike, parted out two more, and funded this guy...



Specialized AWOL Comp frame, Jones handlebars, and Microshift thumb shifters. Mostly parts I had on hand from the bikes and frames/parts that I sold, and some soft bags.

This was on the way to a quick overnight trip a few weeks ago.

Here is my Trek Sawyer loaded for a recent trip:


I will be changing the fork to a salsa so I can mount some cages to the fork. The seat and handlebar bags are from revelate designs, the frame and white tt bag are from Rockgeist, the stem mounted "feed bags" are some rock climbing chalk bags I modified to keep costs down, and the other bag strapped to the TT has my tent poles in it (velcro staps to hold it and paracord to be used to hang food away from the tent while camping).

Front load is the way to go, bike with front load behaves nearly like a normal road bike out of the saddle, really great. while back load makes your frame wobble like a pudding out of the saddle. regards S.

That's the setup I used to bike from SC to OH in 8 days, taking a few detours along the way.

I'm slowly building up the RB-T that I bought a few months ago and will be trying this setup on the C&O in a few weeks. Blumels Lightweight fenders, front rack is a Blackburn with brand new '95 vintage Giant panniers (first time out of the package). The ones shown are the larger pair, but I will not use them if everything fits in the smaller pair. My old Eclipse Pro handlebar bag got washed and installed, and a 1-man tent and sleeping pad will go on top of the rear rack. Another bottle cage and a leather saddle and it should be ready.
