I can finally add to this thread instead of lurking so much. Here's a picture of my LHT from a memorial day weekend bike camping trip on the C&O tow path. I had a fantastic time and hope to get a couple more trips in this summer with a nice several night trip tossed in there as well.

Hey Guys. Thanks for looking NezzyDezzyand Juggleaddict. The bike is awesome and we will be travelling to Vancouver BC in two weeks - I'm so stoked. You could have never convinced me to put drop bars on a mountain bike - but I'm saying it works on this bike and feels very comfortable to ride, its the most comfortable bike I've ever owned.

I have some serious words of caution to anyone planning to put couplers on bikes with hopes of shipping it in ONE airline spec'd shipping case. Long forks, added with disc brake hubs, added to fenders, racks, etc ......will not fit in one 26X26X10 bag/box/case/whatever. I don't care what the video shows or how long you work on shifting the parts around in the case - it won't all fit in one container. Just an FYI from someone who knows something about it.

Convert pics while storing online, then you use the Insert Image button above to post to BF.
It took me abit to figure out, but you can duu it.

btw nice set up with the trailer and kayak.

that kayak setup is the best. I bought my first kayak last week and my workmates have been saying I should rig up a trailer for it. I thought they were nuts until I saw that picture. Nice work.

Michael's Jandd next to Hildy, my Randonee loaded for a weekend tour. Michael is from Spain, and I met him in the Tyler Hostel outside of Newtown, PA. He's a few days into a meandering cross-country tour.

He was headed down to the Philadelphia suburbs, to an REI where he was planning to pick up a tent and front panniers.

My first loaded test ride with my Thorn Sherpa along the Columbia and Kootenay Railway, and Slocan River, by Nelson BC. Nothing special on it except for the Marathon Extremes which are rolling very well and are making the off road riding more than tolerable.

I was pretty happy with this bike until I saw mrpincher's Fargo. That is one sexy machine. I wish I had those 700cs to help smooth things out even more but I am not complaining.

I leave tomorrow for about a four week tour. I will start on the Columbia and Western Railway in Castlegar BC, pick up the Kettle Valley Railway in Midway and work my way to Vancouver Island where I will meet my wife and we will tour the lower part of the island. I hope to report back on the condition of the KVR since recent feedback wasn't that great due to the ATV traffic. I decided I will have to see for myself.

Just did my first tour so I can now post some pics here It was just a 3 day tour from North Devon to Dartmoor and back to see what it was like riding the loaded bike.

Yes, it was good. First day was a bit fraught. I started later than I intended, approx 12.30, so I felt a bit rushed although the route wasn't very long. I hadn't ridden with the front panniers on before and found the steering badly affected at first but got used to it quite quickly. The route went along an old railway line to start so was mostly flat but then went onto the roads and was mostly steep up and down for the second half. Then the campsite I was aiming for was closed so I had to cycle further to find another one.

Was intending to return the 2nd day but decided to do a small local ride instead and stayed an extra night. The ride back on the third day was more enjoyable as I was more used to everything then.

I am thinking of cycling along the Rhine into Germany and then following the Danube into Austria so this was my first test ride in preperation for that.

Just found this site!

Had my LHT for about a year now, but due to fluctuating jobs, alternate expenses, and severely lacking in bicycle repair and camping knowledge/skills, haven't gone on any sort of over night tour.

But I have slowly been building up my equipment list, and my own fitness by properly abusing my bike in ways it likes:

First real ride on it

Then I went up what was supposed to be a typical provincial kept walking trail....while consrtuction crews were working on a water pipeline, turning the trail into a road; of mud, blasted rock, excavator tracks, etc.






Hoping to get a Brooks B17 this week.

Just a comment, lots of weight in a handlebar bag can really affect your handling as well - could be a candidate.

Though I'm not a fan of Surlys, those bikes look good with those meaty tires. What wheels and tires (size too) are you using? What [PSI] are you running?

I've got 26x1.9" tires on there. I think i ran them about 50psi for that trip. I figured it'd be a decent balance of cushiness and ride quality. The tires I've got on there aren't that great. Some cheapo, heavy Geaxs tires. I'd really like to upgrade to some Schwalbe Marathon Supremes when i get the cash, but that could be a little while.

Wheels are the stock ones that come on the pre-built LHTs: Alex Adventurers.

Tires are 26x2.0 Kenda Karmas. Usually run 50 psi on the street (currently rocking it as my commuter bike). Drop it down to 35-40 for gravel/mud so far.

I've had people look at it like it is disgusting. Others have commented on how it looks confused, and others think it looks great.

I like it, it works for me. Though, there are times I miss my old Felt.

I think it looks great too, with one exception - why do you have 4" of spacers above the stem? Looks like it's taking you to some fun places!!!!

The reason for the huge stack of spacers? That's the way it came since I bought it as a pre-built bike. Haven't had the cash to change anything yet really, but it is on my to-do list.
