I don't see how bicyclists can fit into such neat classifications.
In my community of Bend, we have every kind of rider imagineable, from a Tour de France, Lance Armstrong team mate to...well...me.
Different roads, different hills, different bikes, different riders, different time of day...
I thought I at least had more fun than anyone else, but then a few days ago an old guy like me, but with major legs, mucho lycra and a $12,000 geared wonder-bike blasted past me at warp whatever and a joyful "wide on your left hi-dee-hi-ho!".
He had a big cheerful smile on his face; and not because he passed fixed-gear me on my commute, but because he loved riding his bike.
Still, I love riding a fixed gear bike and will continue to do so as long as I physically can.

+1 i tend not to do both at the same time though. And when i am on my fixed, i hate myself for being a spoiled prick with a carbon bike, and when i am on the other, i hate my hipster, gradstudent self for waisting my oxygen.
Kind of like the drive car hate biker, bike hate the car.
moral, i am always right in the moment, to hell with everyone else

eh, there's plenty of lazy roadies out there who like to dress the part, you can't always give them the benefit of the 'oh yah recovery spinning'
but it still confuses me why people feel the need to shoot dirty glances while I'm going the opposite way
assuming they're not making snap judgements about my personal character, it's like why would you ride in constant agony
agony leads to fear which leads to anger which leads to contempt for the bike and all human life and oh god quit looking at me with those possessed eyes maybe if you took it easy every once in awhile you'd ride more than once on sunday

Okay, help me out here: who am I supposed to race? And who am I supposed to look down on?

I could care less what someone rides, how much money they make (or how much money I THINK they make), what kind of cyclist THEY think they are, what kind of kit they wear, if they ride steel or cf... if that kind of ***** ever starts to bother me, I probably should pick another sport/lifestyle because I just turned into the worlds biggest pussie! I take about as much stock of that as I do ******* yelling at me, while riding, to stay on the sidewalk where I belong.
So did everyone have a good commute to work this morning?!

Eh. I'm a slow roadie myself... I've been intrigued by the idea of a fixie, but my fat-ass would break my knees before it got interesting, probably. That, and I like having a break going downhill
I see fixies in Prospect Park all the time, fast and slow, all kinds. Doesn't really bother me much, and I doubt I bother them. I like having my beater around for just going on rides to get someplace, and not being dressed like a complete ****** when I arrive, but there's something appealing about the sense of purpose that comes from being kitted out. Just because the "hipster" uniform is different doesn't mean it's not a uniform of sorts.
And, FWIW, I ride an aluminum bike, that's either six or seven years old... not big enough game for the mighty roadie smiting guad-masters on their track bikes.

it's not a competition but I always chuckle when people with 6000$ worth of kit and riding like they're training for the TDF keep getting passed by my leisurely self because they dont know the streets in my hood at all.

I'm a roadie, and with only one bike so far I commute on my road bike. Occasionally a guy on a fixed gear will pass me, occasionally I'll pass them. It makes the commute more fun though when we're about matched on speed and take turns pulling against the wind.
