New One for me, sheared off crank spindle

Among the bike donations last week was this one, the NDS spindle was sheared off. It did not show any signed of being cut, it looked like it snapped.

The rest of the bike was pretty decent looking so it got moved over to the "To Be Repaired" pile rather then the dismantle and scrap.

This was a first for me, went through our salvage parts and found a proper size replacement spindle and a set of crank arms with the same gear tooth count and a set of pedals. Work on it begins tomorrow..

I have a Campagnolo spindle that looks just like the one in the photo.

Every manufactured item can have hidden flaws or a quirk in the structure or a bubble in the casting.
All it takes is an opportunity to show itself.

Should be an easy rebuild.

There used to b a fellow about 5 miles outside of town and he fixed a lot of bikes and I'd sometimes help him. One day he showed me a bike with a loose bottom bracket. It was a Shimano cartridge unit. When I opened up the bottom bracket the one half of the broken bottom bracket spindle fell off. I've never seen a broken cartridge square taper bottom bracket spindle before then.

Cheers

Hope whoever owned that bike wasn't standing and pedaling when that happened!

That's a fair amount of rust, so that's been weakening for awhile.

Could have rusted after shearing and being left out because it was unrideable.

The bike more then likely was laying around outside after it broke, we get a lot of rusty bikes and items.

It's not my bike, Yeah we get a lot of those donated in.

It came into our charity shop but thanks for showing what a snob you are and that you didn't read the OP, then again maybe you only looked at the pictures and can't read.

It was a mountain type bike, that is a pivot point of the frame.

That was my thought too, possible defect in the steel.
Yes we put in a spindle, cranks (same chain ring size) and a set of pedals from our "salvage" stock along with new bearings and grease. Everything else checked out so It is ready to be given out.

So an MTBSO....

And yes, I'm joking, I'm sure it'll be a fine entry level bike for someone needing one.

Were you born with that sorry loser attitude or do you work at being that way on purpose?

While a not common failure mode, not unheard of either.

I had this exact thing happen to me starting across an intersection on my first folding bike, a Strida 2. Luckily no damage to the nethers. :-)

Thanks! It was a surprise for sure. I had to pick up the crank and hot-foot it to a bus line to get to my train. Eventually I got a replacement spindle. The Strida importer said he had never seen that kind of failure in a "mild steel" part. I've never seen a crank spindle that wasn't hardened...

I think bike programs and coops that help get bikes to kids and folks that couldn't otherwise afford them allow people to have a childhood with some sort of normalcy and also allow others to get to work when they otherwise may not have been able to. Oh and that entire exercise thing.

Those who make fun of 'low quality' bikes that can legitimately alter the trajectory of someone's life have likely never been left for wanting or just like to go around and post drunk.

Either way. This is great work.

Thanks for sharing this terrifying failure with us! Hopefully the bike is kinder to its next owner!
