Don’t hit me!!!

In Sacramento, there are several bike paths, many along the American River. I just commented recently, about spotting 3 deer together (2 bucks and a doe), but this morning beat that pretty good. 🙄

I was up at 5:30-ish, to get ahead of the heat, and saw 5 different deer, all separately. One was a very large doe, who surprised me by standing on the bike path, eating from a tree, on a blind curve. I must have been about 10 feet away, before she moved, and for a few seconds there, I was SURE I was gonna hit her. 😲 We were looking at each other, and I thought to myself, “Good thing I don’t have headlights on, or she’d freeze”, lol, and just then, she turned & ran off. 😎

That sure woke me up, and got my heart pumping. I think I’ll probably be a lot more careful on blind curves, from now on. 😁😉

In 2013 I had one run out in front of me as I was descending at around 30 mph. It literally happened after I reminded my self out loud to stay alert because you never know what could come out of the woods. Had I been going slightly faster I would likely have been toast.

My wife and I were riding back into town the other day when we encountered 3 deer, doe and 2 fawns, in the middle of town. I'm not sure what they were doing or how they were going to navigate their way out. We live in a small town, about 9000, but we are surrounded by forests. A few years ago we had 10 cougar sightings within city limits.

There was a local fellow on a training ride doing hill repeats on the steepest grade hill we have (he was a very good category 3 racer) when he struck a deer on the downhill at high speed. Broke numerous bones and pretty much ended his racing career.

A woman whom I tour with had a squirrel dart out in front of her on a decent downhill and got caught up in her front wheel. She went over the bars and broke her clavicle.

Stuff happens, glad you weren't hurt.

Thanks for the kind thought. ✌️

I’m pretty skinny, probably weigh no more than 170 pounds, and she was pretty well-fed, probably closer to 200 pounds. I hate to think what I would’ve looked like, if we DID collide. 🥺

A couple years ago I had a good sized doe jump over my back wheel as I whizzed by at 18ish mph.

As I came around a corner on a MUP we both saw each other at the same moment(I was nearly beside her at about 6-7 feet away) and she was startled. A split second after that she jumped toward and slightly behind me. I ducked..scared the heck out of me. It all happened and was over in a second. Hitting her or hitting a brick wall...pretty much the same thing.

Yep. I kept thinking about all the cars & trucks, that hit deer, that you see pics of. Totalled most of the time. 😧

BTW, I did thank her, for running off right on time. Not sure she heard or understood me, but I did say it. 😎
